  • HJ's Nissan Leaf "how far can you go" review. 17 Nov 2010 (Forum)
Pedantry aside, it's good that there's a half decent electric car available now rather than a portaloo bolted to a GoKart chassis - now we really are motoring. Top Gear's similar “how far can we go on a gallon of fuel” test enraged me - the "Pious" set off with fully-charged batteries + a gallon of fuel - that test was simply unfair, the energy in the "Piouses" batteries didn't come from nowhere - it cost fuel to put it there!
  • peugeot 306 TD - juddering/struggling for power around 2500-3000 up 13 Oct 2010 (Forum)
hi everyone, i have an S reg 1.9TD that has 107k on the clock, just had a service and belt around 5k ago, only owned the car for 2 months, it has got progressively worse for juddering/struggling at around 2500rpm and upwards, there seems to to a lack of fuel, air or something when you put you foot down and it goes over the 2500 mark. i use a nearby garage who have bee on a roadtest with me and you can feel the car jolt when you are driving and a passenger, it also seems to not be as good on fuel as it should be.
  • Mazda 6 - Mazda 6 Wont Fire 17 Aug 2010 (Forum)
My Mazda 6 2L Diesel, 53 plate, wont fire. It turns over just fine but will not fire. Changed the glow plugs, checked fuel is going to the injectors (it is), fuses OK, fuel filter cleaned. Local garage (not dealer) isn't getting any fault codes. Previous threads suggest the SCV, but I haven't had any stalling and minimal rough running (maybe the last couple of days at intiial start up for a few seconds - I had worse last year and 0k miles agao but a new fuel filter cured that).
  • 2000 Ford focus 1.8 petrol - Increased mpg - redex or superunleaded? 16 Mar 2010 (Forum)
I've always use supermarket unleaded but decided to try BP superunleaded. I also put in some redex fuel/additive injector cleaner. Its only been a few days but I've noticed the fuel gauge not moving down as fast compared to before. Its too early to tell whether the mpg has increased and whether the slow moving fuel gauge is just psychological.

  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 97 1.9 Suddenly Wont Start! 27 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Bought a 1997 1.9 Peugeot 306 diesel last week for knocking about in, grand little runner and is frugal on the fuel, however this morning after fitting a new stereo (turned out to be broken) it won't start. I refitted the new stereo to no avail, I disconnected the battery in an attempt to reset the immobiliser to no avail, I checked all the fuses and they're all fine, for some reason the fuel gauge reads empty despite the fact I filled it last night!
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 01 2.0 Fuel Supply Problem? 20 Aug 2009 (Forum)
By the time the truck arrived, the driver could drive the car on and off OK. The car has done 170,000 miles and as far as I know has not had the fuel filter replaced. Could this be the problem? Any advice would be appreciated
  • Citroen Despatch (2007 - ) - 05 1.9d Intermittant engine surging woes. 2 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Evening all,my citroen despatch van has developed an engine surging problem.Whilst driving in the mid speed range & accelerating the van seems to hold back as if its hunting for fuel & you can hear a loud crack from the engine as if the fuel timing is to far advanced followed by a brief cloud of smoke,it then clears itself & the van runs perfectly at higher speeds.Im led to believe the ecu & other various sensors controls the advance/retard fuel timing on the injection pump regarding this engine.Could it be a dodgy multiplug connection somewhere or has the pump solenoid shot its bolt?.
  • Peugeot Partner Combi (2001 - 2004) - 2000 2.0 Error code help please! 30 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I have had trouble with my W REG HDI Partner van cutting out and it feels like its being starved of fuel! the guy that read these codes wasnt sure what i should do next and seemed a bit vague about it. I think that 1521 relates to the clutch switch. 1608 coolant temperature alert. 0230 fuel pump primary circuit failure 0191 i am unsure other than the in tank fuel pump related beit electrical or the pump itself.
  • Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - Diesel Life Span 14 Aug 2008 (Forum)
So does diesel have a shelf life? has it been contaminated with bacteria? Should I use it mixed with new fuel? Britmonkey
  • Imagine- if you were an oil company... 7 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Then you learn that the company which delivers your fuel is in dispute with its drivers and they threaten a short strike. It won't actually do that much harm, and the drivers son't get much public support. But you realise that the public will become so paranoid about getting fuel, they don't notice the price so much for months afterwards.
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - Fuel error 13 Jun 2008 (Forum)
started to fill up with BP unleaded rather than Diesel. After about 5 litres I suddenly realised the mistake. I paid for the fuel and asked a slightly bewildered what I should do. He said people in the past had done this and what they did was fill up to the brim in Diesel and then keep it topped up for a while. So I did that filled right up.
  • Volkswagen Passat (1997 - 2000) - High fuel consumption 28 May 2008 (Forum)
I have an 'R' registered VW Passat 1.8 20 valve, which i bought 2nd hand from a local VW dealer. It's really thirsty on fuel - even though it's only a 1.8 20 valve. I have been watching the on board trip computer - which gives readings of 20 - 30 mpg during town driving. Sorry i can't give an exact figure of how thirsty the car is - but it seems alot more thirsty than 20 - 30mpg - and it's only 1.8 - my previous Passat 1.8 diesel by contrast was brilliant (but noisy!).
  • Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 1996 1.9td estate extremely poor fuel economy 22 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Hi everyone, First time post here but from what i see you all know your stuff. I have a 96 xantia 1.9td estate and the fuel ecomomy is shocking. I have done this several times now and getting the same results each time, i am filling up with diesel and putting in 68 litres. (which is 15 gallons) and the most i have had out of a tank is 397 miles. i have even tried totally unladden apart from me with very light acceleration and not going over 2000 rpm this got me to the 397 miles.
  • Benford Single cyl ListerPetter Dumper Black Smoke 17 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I have been enjoying myself immensely roaring up and down my garden in a Benford dumper which I am using to muck away the footings for my new garage (ebay, £200). However, yesterday it ground to a halt with all the symptoms of fuel starvation. This morning I took the diesel tank off and cleaned it out - found a little water and some fine rust, but not too bad - took the fuel filter off and cleaned it all out, blew through all the pipes, bled it up to the injector and fired it up.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 01 2.0 tddi, high fuel consumption 2 Feb 2008 (Forum)
hi, can anyone help? i have just purchased a 2001 Mondeo tddi 2.0l zetec(60,000miles) and am getting really bad fuel consumption, ie, 26 mpg around town, this has been consistent for 4 weeks and i have been driving like a Sunday driver (im not a boy racer) the garage have done a diagnostic test which did not show any engine faults, but the oil level was 1/2l above max, the mechanic said this could be the problem so he drained it out, also the air flow sensor was unplugged (i noticed this about three weeks ago) so i plugged it back in but there was no noticeable difference to the engine running when i did so, have i bought a pig in a sack???
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - Surely this car can use any Diesel sold in UK ? 8 Nov 2007 (Forum)
    Surely a 2006 car from a major manufacturer should be able to run on any diesel fuel sold in the UK? {tweak to Subject Line }
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - Fuel range & MPG for Mk1 1.8 Zetec? 19 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Hi I have a Mk1 Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec Collection at the moment, and just wanted to know whether or not this model car had a reputation for being a bit thirsty? The reason why I am asking is because from filling her up, to getting to the fuel light coming on, i am only getting a range of around 275-290 miles, and that is with me driving normally, and not caning it anywhere. I had imagined a 1.8 engine would be getting around 350 miles out a £45 fill up?
  • Peugeot 307 (2001 - 2007) - HDi disappointing fuel economy 2 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I far as I am aware it is exactly the same engine (though 5 years newer - so should be better?) in a smaller car so why would my fuel consumption be so much worse? Generally my driving style/speed remains unchanged - though I would say that the 307 is much livelier so I probably accelerate more briskly, but as I say, 90% of my driving time is spent pootling down the M4 at 70-80mph - exactly as before.
  • USA wakes up to diesel cars ? 9 May 2007 (Forum)
The report, "Diesel Challenges Hybrids in the US," concluded that new, low-sulfur diesel and cleaner-burning diesel engines could help carmakers sell light-duty diesel vehicles in all 50 states. Diesel vehicles achieve fuel mileage superior to hybrids, and are popular in Europe where fuel is very expensive. Five states led by California prevent the sale of diesel cars through strict emissions regulations. But cleaner diesel and new engines from DaimlerChrysler and Honda that convert harmful emissions into harmless nitrogen could have diesels making inroads.
