Citroen Xantia 1.9 TD (Bosch pump) - Simple glow plug change gone wrong! Wont idle now! 11 Feb 2014 (Forum)
I stuffed rags around the pump and watched as air bubbles and fuel gushed out. After a while the bubbles reduced so I re-tightened the return union. I rinsed away any spilt diesel and tried to start it up again. I possibly sounded slightly better but didn't want to start. -
Peugeot 306 - A small list of problems... 6 Sep 2010 (Forum)
After a little while or a quick blip of the throttle it will clear its self and return to the normal loud diesel crack. when i turn off the engine i can turn off the ignition remove the key and the engine will continue to run for a few seconds. On a short trip the car wont be affected as much. i am thinking prehaps fuel pump not shutting off fuel or something to do with the idle? -
Volvo XC90 (2002 - ) - I'm getting used to it! 9 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I am slowly getting to grips with it and in fact most of the issues I now have with it are down to the poor preparation by the supplying Volvo dealer. Like all diesel automatics, it need to wake up and stretch in the morning and the fuel consumption is dreadful at that time and also stuck in traffic and city streets at any time. You can't quiet see the fuel gauge drop but the average on the trip meter certainly does. -
Just feasable car commute LPG? 9 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Facts are 76 miles each way 152 miles a day 760 miles a week 3040 miles a month 34,960 miles a year based on a 46 week working year. Company to pay fuel costs for 1st year and a 50% contribution in 2nd year with hopeful salary adjustment. We run 2 cars, a Toyota Rav 4 1996 that returns approx 26mpg and a petrol 1.8 Picasso 2002 that returns 34.9mpg on above route. -

Indestructable Peugeot 309 22 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Even allowing for it's 5 percent overeading odometer, fuel consumption works out to 51 mpg. The car is also used as an automotive experiment. Apart from safety checks/annual MOT test, it never misses a beat despite the 15,000 to 18,000 miles annual mileage. -

A quandary, third car or not? 25 May 2018 (Forum)
But 4wd suspension stands up to it better, and in the snow of early March, it was not passable without the SUV (more for the clearance than the 4wd however!) Earlier this year I swapped my IX35 for a Leon diesel, which I love, drive hard and gives 48mpg day in day out. I am wondering whether to consider adding another car to the fleet for SWMBOs daily use, which will be more fuel efficient and save wear and tear on the Kia, but I'm not entirely sure the sums add up. -
Vauxhall Corsa D 2007 1.3 CDTi - Engine doesn't pick up and runs rough 3 Dec 2014 (Forum)
The problem slowly got worse so I searched the interweb to see if anybody else had suffered the same problem and it seems that a few people had but nobody came up with the fix to this problem, just loads of none-relevant theories. So I was on my own, first I changed the air filter and then the diesel fuel filter, this made no difference. Further searches on the interweb on rough running engines seemed to point to the Mass Air Flow (MAF) unit being at fault, this unit measures the air flow into the engine and sends the relevant signal the the engine's Engine Control Unit (ECU). -

"Never again" jobs 23 Sep 2006 (Forum)
The lower cover on the cambelt refused to "snap in" to the upper cover. You wouldn't believe how much time I lost here. The mother of all air-locks was present in the fuel system when re-starting. I have bled the fuel system on this car several times, and this is the one and only time it has decided to soak me and most of the engine bay in diesel when I eased the filter outlet pipe off. -
Corsa CDTI 2004 - LOTS of Black smoke..... 13 Nov 2011 (Forum)
So i decided to have a look at it as i am quite a good mechanic but have little experience with Diesels, so with a bit of help from a mate with another Identical CDTI and the Internet i have changed the following with no joy, also the working car didn't play up at all. High pressure fuel pump (Swapped from working car) checked low pressure tank pump was working and had plenty of pressure Fuel rail inc regulator and Pressure sensor (Swapped from working car) Injectors (they do need cleaning as when i fit mine to the good car it started smoking a bit but nothing major) also there is a slight leak from the copper washers but the good car runs fine with the same leak. -
Mazda 6 Tourer - Please help.. Mazda 6 2.2 diesel mpg mega issue 18 Feb 2022 (Forum)
Most of these have now been rectified apart from the worst issue of the lot which is the absolutely dreadful fuel efficiency. I feel as if it is drinking the diesel as if it was a 3 litre v8. I feel as if I am filling it up every other day. From a full tank I am only getting 420 miles. Over 100 less than I was getting from my 5 year older less economical ford mondeo. -
Most Reliable Hatchback For Under 5k? 23 Sep 2020 (Forum)
I had toyed with the idea of getting an FN2 Civic Type R, but the road tax puts me off, I know they're a cracking engine as I've had an EP3 that had done a lot of miles. I used to do just about all the maintenance on the cars I had. I'm thinking to avoid diesel cars. I just want something that is reliable and not bad on fuel, I'm not bothered how fast it is, but I'm guessing it needs to be at least 100 BHP. I'm thinking of a Honda Civic, same shape as the FN2, Hyundai I30, Kia Ceed or possibly a Focus. -
Volkswagen Passat CC 08 - Is this even right or what? 5 Feb 2015 (Forum)
Hi everyone, I have a Passat CC 08, CR engine GT 140hpb diesel. Somehow the consumption of the car just doesn't add up. When I start the car, it starts off with 8mpg, but it should be around 40mpg within the city. I have talked to many people who own cars with similar amenities and they say their average consumptions is 42-45 mpg. -
Small, petrol engined automatics - poor economy 1 Sep 2013 (Forum)
Would you say this was poor? I would have been disappointed with less than 40mpg in my S-Max (admittedly a diesel auto) for the motorway trips. -
2003 combo 1.7di - Corsa combo power loss 13 Jul 2013 (Forum)
important; color: #009900; font-size: 100%; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline !important; background-color: transparent;">fuel pump showed no issues. The mechanic knew very little about diesels so I didn't leave the van with him as he looked stumped. Before I take it into a garage can anyone arm me with likely causes so I don't get ripped off with un-necessary work. -
Skoda Superb Estate - Which Skoda is more reliability 22 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Taking into consideration things like turbo's; injectors; DMF; DPF and whatever else they bolt on to these engines, which of the above 3 engines, with our current knowledge, should require the least repairs (ignoring fuel and tax etc for the moment)? Many thanks -
Ford Mondeo TDCi 130bhp 06 - Fumes getting inside. What to check? 6 Sep 2011 (Forum)
I have a very friendly and very local indie garage (though I'm not sure how expert they are with diesels). I'm inclined to take the car to them as a first port of call with this issue. So my question is: Could someone in the know possibly suggest some possible causes for this problem that the garage could check.
