  • HJ doubting diesel 29 Apr 2008 (Forum)
In HJ's Saturday Telegraph column today he comments to a reader that he is getting so many reports of failed DMFs/clutches, injection pumps, injectors, turbos, intercoolers and EGR valves on diesels that he wonders whether overall running costs may be cheaper for petrol engined cars. Now I don't agree with HJ on everything he writes but it was EGR valve problems (and mis-fueling concerns) that put me off a diesel C Max last year.
  • When the default answer doesn’t fit 8 Mar 2019 (Forum)
“Which small-medium sized car would you recommend as a local taxi? Hybrids are expensive so I'm thinking a petrol, with no DMF and chain driven. Better if it is non-turbo too but that isn't a deal breaker and MPG should be reasonably good.” To which HJ answered by telling them to buy a Mazda CX-3 auto or a Honda Jazz 1.5 neither of which would be a sensible taxi or qualify with any local authority I know of.
  • Hyundai i40 1.7 diesel - Remap 7 Sep 2018 (Forum)
So I spoke to tuning guys who can do a remap. My question is, will this put added strain on the clutch and DMF? As the transmission on these cars is already very suspect. Here are the specs  We can remap your i40 for £349 and you can get up to 10% better MPG depending on how you drive it and they go from : Original BHP 141 Tuned BHP 155 BHP (Increase) 14 Original Torque (Nm) 340 Tuned Torque (Nm) 370 Torque (Increase) 30 You will notice a good difference in the way the car drives, with a sharper throttle response, smoother power curve.
  • Ford Transit 2.4TDDi 53 plate Jumbo 90 350 - engine pulls back at 3000 revs, 21 Jan 2017 (Forum)
Yet when in Neutral and static it happily goes way beyond 3000 revs,up to 5000 possibly. I have changed the fuel filter, and we had a new clutch fitted last year (solid to replace dmf).  Also have had vehicle re chipped to improve performance and economy. First time it happened as we approached M40 and accelarating into position on inside lane. Prior to this my foot had slipped off the clutch causing a sharp tremble butt I was able to recover and did not stop.
  • Toughest car ever made 4 Oct 2016 (Forum)
With all the talk of costly failures on modern turbo diesel cars. DPF, DMF & premature turbo failure, I'm hankering back to a simpler time. The days when a simple well maintained Diesel engine could cover massive mileages with little grief for owners. I've been in a Nissan Bluebird 2.0dLX with over 1m miles on its original engine, a Mk II Granada 2.5DL with more than 750k, Isuzu engined Cavaliers with 500k upwards, a Peugeot E7 HDI with 850k and I've sold a Toyota Carina 2.0 XLd with 452k which was running and driving fine.
  • Focus TDCI 2002 - Ford TDCI - Guess what... cutting out! 18 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Not heard about this as a cause of cutting out before but it seems unlikely to be injectors or the usual culprits as it runs and accelerates well, economy as expected (46mpg avg on fairly demanding commute), clutch/dmf replaced last year.... I've taken it to the dealer and already given up because of the usual 60-100 quid charge for the privilege of them plugging their laptop in to it and telling you something that doesn't fix it and usually requires further outlay.
  • Vauxhall Vectra 1.9 sri - Advice needed on problems with new car 11 Apr 2016 (Forum)
Here is the list of items: -three tyres cracked and worn below legal limit -tracking out -front bulb gone and number plate bulb gone -Anti rollbar bushing gone in back - DMF and clutch need to be replaced. My worst fears were confirmed about the DMF and the clutch! I phoned the dealer immediately and his tone changed considerably. He said he would do his best to fit me in and have a look, however they would not be changing the DMF if it was noisy and not failed, and they don’t care what the other garages report says.
  • VW Passat 2.0 TDI - Sell or Fix? 7 May 2017 (Forum)
I have a 2013 Passat 2.0 CR TDi estate which has just reached 93,000 miles - we had it for a year now - doing 12,000 miles (give or take) and have been told that the DMF is starting to fail, which was one of my fears with buying another disel. The average quote is £900 to replace the clutch & flywheel. With the mileage that I'm doing I'm considering part-exchanging rather than fixing, I'd still like something with a decent size boot, e.g. mondeo/mazda size, and don't really require an estate, but now thinking if petrol is the way to go?
  • Ford Focus Diesel 1.8 TDi 2007 - Erratic RPM and loss of power 9 Nov 2014 (Forum)
I was thikning that if the clutch is gone than the rpm should go up with no gain in power? Please correct me if I am wrong. Do you think its the clutch/DMF problem? I havent felt any noticable change in gear shift, but it tends to struggle uphill sometimes?   Hope to hear from someone soon.   Cheers
  • Vauxhall Insignia 2.0D 160 or Hyundai I40 1.7D 136 25 Jun 2014 (Forum)
Hi, quick thoughts please for a friend unable to choose between a new -  Vauxhall Insignia (face lift) 2.0 ctdi 160 manual and Hyundai i40 1.7 crdi 136 auto They are the only 2 cars on his company car list.   Is the 2.0 diesel in the Insignia ok? has the insignia clutch/DMF problem been solved? I have heard from 2 taxi drivers the i40 is not as reliable as the other vehicles Hyundai sell, is this true? Will it spend a fair bit of time in the repair bay?   He always buys his cars from the lease company for his wife, so he wants to make the right long term choice.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 05 2.0 TDCi - Change it or keep it? - comments wel 14 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Hi folks Have a 130bhp Mondeo TDCi hatch, 3 years old this July, 42K miles. Had a new fuel pump at 38K, and has just had a new clutch kit + DMF, all under warranty. Big question - do I keep it for a while, since the things that seem to go wrong on these have all been recently replaced, or do I punt it before the warranty expires? Noticed advice on the perennial Mazda 6 diesel thread, to a guy who has bought a Mondeo - "get rid of it before the warranty expires", but remember earlier on the original Mazda 6 diesel engine failure thread 'Screwloose' saying that only a small percentage of TDCis give trouble but in his experience every Mazda6 diesel will come to grief given time.
  • Used car leasing 2 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Since the car will go out of warranty during a 3 year rental, who picks up the tab if the engine goes pop or the car needs a new DMF? I assume since the renter does not 'own' the car that the company will be liable for these costs and provide a replacement car whilst the repairs are done??

  • Mondeo or Vectra / Diesel or petrol? 3 Aug 2014 (Forum)
I have been reading a lot of forums and narrowed to diesel but with my budget i can get a 04 / 05 / 06 plate... Diesel means chains / turbos / DMF / wat not and what more? Infact i did find a Vectra 3.0 Diesel 05 plate 85k miles done for £2200 and a Ford Mondeo 04 plate 2.0 Diesel 115K miles done for £1900... Any help or advice would be helpful..!!
  • A4 2002 1.9TDI - Audi 14 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Question 1 Car needs a new clutch, though still working, pedal is hard and bites at the top. Question does this car have a DMF, if so should it be replaced as well?  Prices for clutches vary a lot.   I assume LUK is the original though Valeo and Sachs are all listed.  Prices vary between 80 throught o 240.  LUK seem to have many  variants on offer, any difference in qulaity between lower priced LUK and higher.
  • Ford Focus Estate TDCI Estate. - What Clutch?. 23 Jun 2013 (Forum)
As the car was bought as a PX to clear with no warranty given or implied It looks like forking out for a new clutch will be his only option. My question is, Is it a DMF fitted to this vehicle?. (If it is), Then im only too familiar with the Ford dealerships rubbing their hands in anticipation of the £1200/1300 + VAT Sir, they're fond of quoting. Which in effect mean's a cheap "bargain" vehicle becomes a very expensive one.
  • All models - Dual mass flywheel failures 22 Jun 2010 (Forum)
In consultation with Honest John we have created a national panel of independent automotive engineers who will examine the parts and vehicle in the event of dual mass flywheel (DMF) problems to evaluate whether the failure resulted from a manufacturing defect or owner misuse. In most cases we hope to be able to undertake these cases on a no-win-no-fee- basis but this will inevitably be based on the prospects for success.
  • Diesels falling apart 14 Dec 2009 (Forum)
We today I have just been dealing with a 2005 Sharan 1.9PD - car on variable servicing and turbo kaput at less than 50k miles. Last week we had a Golf of similar age with only 40k miles and turbo and DMF gone on that too. Last month we had a Vectra 1.9 D (2005 or 6, can't remember) engine totally AWOL at 100k (it was a taxi) and a similar age Mondeo TDCI with broken up fuel pump at 60k. No wonder there are some cheap s/hand cars about.
  • Skoda Octavia II (2004 - ) - 06 2.0 TDI Dual Mass Flywheel failure ? 1 May 2009 (Forum)
I had originally thought this could be a tyre/tracking/wheel bearing problem but I now find myself wondering whether this is symptomatic of the beginnning of DMF failure and wonder if anyone could shed any light before I contact the dealership (lease car)? Apart from the vibration, mainly felt at 70mph + under throttle (mainly cruise at an indicated 80) the car drives normally.
