In praise of old clunkers 14 Sep 2003 (Forum)
However the engine is sound, the tires have about 0.13mm tread on them (that's OK this is the Philippines) and they all match, and most importantly the aircon is strong for our hot and humid climate. It seems to need a pint of coolant every two days and I have no compunction about awarding it a dose of plain old well water for this purpose. I am beginning to love the thing. I can park it anywhere without having to pay someone to watch it while I'm enjoying the rugby and a few tinnies at the local watering hole. -
A bought a car that now needs repairs - and the dealer is refusing to pay. What do I do? 15 Apr 2017 (Ask HJ)
I recently purchased a Vauxhall Astra but within the first 24 hours the battery died and the rear left tyre needed replacing due to having a puncture beyond... -
Garage says they don't have money to refund me?! 18 Nov 2013 (Forum)
I live in the UK and bought a car from an independant used car dealership a week ago, and as soon as I got it home noticed a coolant leak. Took it back the next day, and it has been in the garage since. I asked for a refund but they said they needed to wait for the report from the garage first before they knew if that would be possible. -
Alfa GT 3.2 V6 - Problems with new(to me) car dealer won't fix! 12 Feb 2011 (Forum)
It was pointed out to me that the front bumper had been resprayed and I am fine with that, however a few days after buying I checked the coolant level and it was down so I topped it up and things seemed ok (I work from home and don't actually use it much). I'll make this shorter by saying that I found it leaked but only really noticable when doing longer journeys, had it pressure tested and radiator was leaking had this replaced but dealer wouldn't pay (offered £80, it cost £250 doing it cheaply buying from ebay and local garage not alfa). -
Mazda 6 Diesel Sport 2L 2002 model - ENGINE STALLING THEN KNOCKING SOUND PLEASE HELP 17 Jan 2011 (Forum)
I looked at the dipstick and the oil was not registering on it, i could see none leaking from anywhere and the coolant level was fine with no signs of oil in it. I took off the oil filler cap and there was a small amount of white smoke coming from inside the engine. There was no gunk on the filler cap. -
Mazda 6 2007 TS 2.0 Diesel - 41000 miles and catastrophic engine failure 4 Jun 2010 (Forum)
i know I should have stalled it, but my main concern was my daughter - I thought the thing was going to explode. Eventually it stopped, but the engine had leaked a load of coolant and the radiator head had blown off. When Mazda Assistance's roadside guy arrived he reckoned it was the turbo, but said he could not see why this had blown the radiator. When the car got delivered to the Mazda garage the Mazda dealer's service engineer informed me when they received the car that I had no service history on the electronic record and therefore Mazda were not allowing him to touch it - not even to diagnose the problem. -
Corsa 1.2 Vegas Starting Problems 10 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Once replaced, car turned over almost immediately. We then asked another friend to run a diagnostic and he found coolant temp sensor high when the car was still relatively cold. As this was only £11 to change, I went ahead and bought the sensor and fitted it. The car started and off we went. Next morning - nothing again. -
2 perplexing problems 1996 Range Rover 20 Nov 2006 (Forum)
heater core O rings ? when I moved the car (by towing) on the sloping driveway I noticed about a small cup of coolant pour out of the RHS footwell and sure enough there are tell-tale green drips from the bottom HEVAC vent (right on to the Nokia hands-free speaker!) Could this small leak be causing the current drain? -
1992 Vauxhall Astra 1.4I 8v SOHC 17 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Had a bit of fun (not) farting about getting the cambelt tension correct and got the whole lot together after also changing engine oil/filter and recharging coolant circuit with 50/50 antifreeze mix. Engine turned over fine by hand without resistance (turned over many times while doing belt tension). Attempted start – engine cranked but did not fire!! -
We only do trips of 10 miles at a time - should we avoid buying a diesel car? 10 Apr 2018 (Ask HJ)
Our 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee is tired and we fancy a Mercedes-Benz ML-Class 3.0. We're wary of diesels because we only do trips of about 10 miles. Should... -
Ford Mondeo MK3 2.0 TDCI 2005 - What is wrong with my car? 6 Mar 2021 (Forum)
I carried on until finding a safe place to stop and then turned the engine off, lifted the bonnet and checked the oil, coolant and for anything that looked out of place in the engine bay. I decided to try and start the car and was sucessful after the engine turned over a few more times then usual. When the engine started it was back to normal again and the fault was not there. -
Ford C-MAX - C-Max 2016 - 1.5 TDCI, 1.0 Ecoboost or 1.6 Ti-VCT 24 Mar 2019 (Forum)
PROS- There are a lot of them, which I don't know if it's good or bad. Adjusted consumption. Cons- I've read a lot of problems in different forums. Coolant losses, refrigerant pipes cracking, engine changes, etc. A very long list of affected people. Are these Ecoboost problems been resolved after the facelift? 1.6 Ti-VCT 120HP? (I don't remember the HP very well) Atmospheric petrol. -
2011 Peugeot 207 1.4 8v - Possible failed cambelt? 18 Feb 2019 (Forum)
https://streamable.com/jr4bi Some further checks I did... - Oil level is ok. - Coolant level slightly below minimum, and a bit of sludge in there (has always been very dirty in there and Google images show the same on other 207's), but has correct level of protection. - Took engine cover off but didn't reveal anything as too much oil in there, but what I did see all looked ok. -
Mercedes-Benz SportCoupé Kompressor - Too Shiny For Me 19 Apr 2017 (Forum)
" "The transmission oil cooler of automatics is sited in the radiator matrix, so failure can lead to coolant entering the transmission and destroying it, leaving the owner with a bill of £4k +" in fact all problems seem to leave "the owner with a bill of £4k +" The first two might be relevant to the reported problem with this car. -
fabia mpi - Rear-ended another car, it's totaled...now scared 17 May 2012 (Forum)
Her air bags didn't deploy and the rear bumper and light cluster is in bad shape......mine is in worse shape and there was coolant fluid all over the road. The officer thought given the age of the car (51 plate) it would be a write-off. I'm really shaken up and passing bricks. I can't believe I was careless enough to let something like this happen...and now without a car I can't get to work. -

Mazda - Mazda used approved warranty claim advice, please 13 Jun 2009 (Forum)
The odd thing is, it is not obviously burning oil (no plumes of blue smoke), it is not leaking oil, the performance is strong and the engine runs very smoothly. The fuel economy is good and the coolant level is static and the engine temperature never deviates once warm. Other than the appetite for oil, you really wouldn?t know there was a thing was wrong with the engine. Took it into my local Mazda garage, and they quickly diagnosed heavy breathing!? -
Celica GT Import - Emissions Failure 2 May 2007 (Forum)
They were too busy to run a full check, but ran a fault-code reader onit, which revealed just the coolant sensor returning "out of range values". The sensor apparently had dirty contacts, so was cleaned and WD-40'd and seemed to be working OK after this, and the fault was reset. The diagnostic chap then ran it on his emission-tester, but the CO was still very high and lambda still way out. -
DS 5 - Smoke from DS DS5 Diesel engine after a short run 16 Jan 2018 (Forum)
I took the cover off the engine for a better look and could see nothing untoward, no obvious leaks. Coolant level was normal and the oil level too, although I did notice a few bubbles on the oil on the dipstick. I also found a little bit of mayonnaise under the oil filler cap. During this time the radiator fan came on and the temperature guage had risen only to the first mark, which is 60 degrees.
