  • Dilemma of dilemmas of dilemmas 2 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Toyota Corolla 2.0 diesel estate Toyota Corolla Verso 2.0 diesel In order to consider the Toyota 1.4 diesel engine, which is more economical than the 2.0 and appears to have fewer issues, I'd have to just get the normal hatchback.
  • Hyundai Tucson - Power Failure Same Place 6 Apr 2022 (Forum)
There was plenty of fuel in the tank. It happens on a busy B road with a 90 degree bend. On approaching the bend at about 20mph and lightly applying the brakes the car stalled and has to be restarted (park, ignition key turned).

  • "DPF fluid is low, fill up" - Peugeot 508 Woes 6 Jan 2020 (Forum)
Feeling pretty hacked off.... car is now on 110k and has run perfect ti it was filled up on saturday, it seems the opening of the filler cap triggers a dose of fluid into the fuel..
  • Hyundai Tucson - Advice please first big purchase 5 Mar 2019 (Forum)
I preferred the tucson, she liked the qashqai n connecta. We compromised and decided to look for a tucson but diesel version with some toys on it (reverse camera, sat nav, touchscreen infotainment system).  Budget 12-15k. At least 2 years manufactures warranty left on the car.  Ideally I'd like to keep it for as long as I can really so it needs to have a reliable engine and not too bad on fuel, but understand I won't get the greatest mpg from an suv.
  • Honest John’s Motoring Agony Column 30-06-2018 Part 2 1 Jul 2018 (Forum)
In answer to DJL with the Volvo XC60 D4, if his car has Volvo's newish VEA D4 4-cylinder 2.0 diesel, the problem is almost certainly related to the well-known problem these cars have with the EGR cooler & valve. The EGR cooler design, and coolant flow to it, has been revised several times to fix the problem, which is overcooling of the exhaust gas.

  • Nissan Terrano II (1993 - 2005) - 1993 2.7 turb No power to glow plugs 3 Apr 2017 (Forum)
Please help. My 1993 Nissan Terrano 2.7 Turbo Diesel wont always start from cold. It either starts fine or takes ages of turning it over before producing clouds of unburnt fuel then starting, more often its the latter. I had the AA out who said there was no power to the glow plugs and gave me a can of easy start, which works but is no long term solution.
  • fiesta 1.4 tdci 53 plate - won't start after overhaul 25 May 2015 (Forum)
I cleaned up the injectors using a wire wheel, proceeded with the rest of the work and built it back up with new parts including injector seal kit and leak off pipe kit, I finally got it back together yesterday primed the diesel (as I also fitted a new service kit including fuel filter) and cranked her over but she refuses to start. Cranks over fine but will not start. As i didnt remove the injectors im not sure if they have gone back in the same order.
  • Modern Automatics 1 Nov 2012 (Forum)
So what are modern autos like? Can you still get the torque converter type and are they more fuel efficient these days? How about DSG style autos - are some manufacturers' boxes better and more reliable than others? Do modern CVTs handle hills better than the old versions used to?
  • Toyota - Yaris Verso replacement 30 Oct 2012 (Forum)
From my point of view, reliability is of paramount importance, which I suppose rules out French cars! Fuel economy not a factor and would much prefer petrol to diesel. It might come to just running on the Yaris for a few more years, and accept it might need some major repairs, if there are no better options.
  • Mondeo TDCi ECU updates / warming up 23 Mar 2012 (Forum)
The car was still drivable so I took it to the Ford dealer who re programmed the ECU and updated the software, the technicians comment was that it will probably be have a smoother responce and the refinement will improve. However the opposite is true, while it still performs well it now exhibits a typical diesel rattle at light throttle openings, particularly when cold, it uses more fuel to the tune of 3-4 mpg and takes a lot longer to warm up. I had come to the view that it was approx end 2002 to end 2003 models that were worst effected by the ECU issues, and that earlier and later cars were OK.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 98 1.9 smoking like mad 19 Nov 2009 (Forum)

  • Volkswagen Passat (2005 - ) - 2007 170 PDi - Is my DPF blocking up? 17 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Hi I've just bought a new VW Passat with the 170 PDI diesel engine. Great car to drive, will let you know in due course if it has any of the trade-mark VW reliability problems! My understanding of the DPF is that if my driving style doesn't suit the DPF then it starts to block up.
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 00 1.8 Escort Van poor starting 28 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I had something similar on an old BMW years ago and eventually sorted it by putting a non-return valve on the fuel pipe, on the engine side of the filter, but on the Escort its harder to see where this should go. Any ideas much appreciated! Cheers
  • Toyota Aygo (2005 - ) - Real world mpg 26 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Since having the car I've moderated my driving style to be slower and smoother - not taken the car over 70 yet, according to satnav. Real mpg figures measured brim to brim(unleaded petrol, not diesel or super unleaded) thus far since new in April are: 55 55 58 57 57 57 55 58 61 58 58 59 65 To put that into perspective, yer actual money saved on fuel compared to doing the same mileage on my old car is £566 since April 22nd 2008.
  • Peugeot 306 d turbo injection pump fault 24 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Hi i have 1996 306 d turbo sport. It has the lucas pump. Basically I adjusted the maximum fuel screw on the diesel pump. Just like i have done on a few other cars to give them that bit more power. After doing all this I put the plastic plug back in. Primed the pump back up using the hand pump.
  • 2001 Ford Mondeo Duratec 2.0 Di EGR? 6 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Dear all, Have a 2001 ford mondeo 2.0 diesel covered some serious miles in it as its a taxi 186,000!!!! Had a problem about 5 months ago were the car was running fine at start up and after a few miles it would start spluttering if it was rev'd hard it would chuck white/blue smoke out of the back.
  • What car for 10-12k? 2 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Hi Everyone, Apologies if this is an oft aired subject here, but I need a new car, have a budget of 10-12k, and have no idea what to get My requirements would be; - fuel consumption not an issue, don't drive far, had a V6 2.5 auto last time, so something similar would be great - favourite car I've owned would be my 2001 Audi S3, they do fall into the budget this time round, so a consideration - I like the look of the Alfa 147, but worried about depreciation - ideally would like something FAST, with leather, air con, CD etc, maybe auto - like the look of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the 2.7 diesel sounds like an ideal choice, this is in budget - other end of the scale, Lotus Elises seem to be going for around this price, as do some Honda S2000's - also seems like some BMWs - 330, 325 - fall into budget, shape before the current one, older M3's look nice Any advice greatfully received, as you can see I'm all over the shop really Thanks Dirk
  • Real mid-life crisis +open top car 14 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Have told the wife that if I don't get one, it will up my blood pressure with dire effects. With a C4 VTR+ diesel hatch (2005 on a 55 plate with 7.5k miles) to p/x, what do you think I would be happy with if the p/x +cash took me to £20K. I like comfort, not too bothered by fuel economy as long as I can get 25mpg round town.
