  • Which of these cheap 90s cars as my first car? 3 Feb 2017 (Forum)
The Polo/Ibiza are also 1.4. Will these 1.4s be significantly more pricier to run? Starlet is 1.3 only. The Cinquecento looks very small and cute but does anyone know if it may be a tad too underpowered (with just 0.9L)? As for reliability I already know the Japanese are best, but is it true that the French ones are bad?
  • the end of the road..... 22 Jan 2017 (Forum)
The gearbox was re built by a specialist 2 years ago so that is in good condition too. I would rather it went to someone who is handy and will fix it and run it, but beggars and choosers eh! I will get my daughter to put it on E Bay tomorrow and see what happens. Pity as at 206K miles the engine is as sweet as a nut and uses hardly any oil between services and returns about 60mpg on a long steady run and about 48mpg running around.
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 02 2.0d 320d starting problems 21 Jul 2015 (Forum)
Where to source a pump (new/reconditioned) and if possible cost. 4. Has anyone got more info, i.e. other factors that may cause the pump not to run (sensors, pressures etc) Any help would be much appreciated. Regards, K
  • Honda Stream - DRL - Daytime Running Lights 19 Jun 2015 (Forum)
Hi, My first post! Assuming one sees merit in having DRL (Daytime Running Lights) retro fitted to your car, I would like to discuss the wiring for it. There are DRL controllers in market which have three extra wires - one each for side indicator and one for headlights.
  • 1.3CDTi Vaux Combo Van, 05 reg - Coolant loss mystery? 12 May 2015 (Forum)
Looked all over the engine, no sign of a leak.  Inside van is dry so not the matrix.  Its running fine, no change in normal temperature, warning lights etc.   Had MOT last Wednesday, so while it was over the pit, they ran the engine and looked all over - nothing.  They then parked it outside, still running for 15 minutes, with some cardboard underneath to show any drips - nothing!
  • VW Polo 1.2 E petrol - VW Polo 52 sooting up one cylinder 23 Oct 2014 (Forum)
The previous owner was not a careful driver and may never have checked the oil as she relied on her mechanic uncle who serviced it once a year :( It has run for another year with me topping up the oil and changing the spark plugs only once and passing it's MOT. Then it started running rougher so I changed the plugs, oil and oil filter which was dirty and it's not made as much difference as before.
  • Ford Ka - 2004 Ford KA: blowing cold air and losing coolant 17 Mar 2014 (Forum)
I've had my Ford KA for about seven or eight months now: it's a fantastic little car, starts up fist time without fail and runs like a dream. A couple of months ago I'd run a usual check on the coolant and oil levels and noticed the former was dangerously low: no problem I thought and topped it back up. I tended to do this once every two weeks (no idea if this is normal!).
  • C Max, Golf Plus or something else - Car choice conumdrum 12 Mar 2014 (Forum)
, I'm sorry Ford but the Cmax is not a five seater.   In addition I do like the Touran and Zafira but running costs and reliability aren't good, is the Altea XL worth a look.   Are there any similar cars to the Verso, golf plus, cmax that are also worth a look, and of these 3 which would I be happy with.
  • Daytime running lights problem 17 Feb 2013 (Forum)
I have just been outside to put my car away in the garage and as i got in i noticed a car setting off in front of me with no rear tails lights showing.I flashed him to let him know he didn't have his lights on.A bit further up my road he did a u-turn and came back towards me.At this point he seemed to have his lights on.As he passed me i looked round and found the back of his car in darkness.I then looked at the plate of the car and noticed it was 2012.My guess was that he had daytime running lights on at the front and because he could see his lights had thought that his lights were already on but obviously no tail lights. This begs the question is why don't cars fitted with DRL's also have auto lights so there is no confusion.
  • 1.8 petrol Vauxhall Vectra Life - Lifespan of 1.8 petrol Vauxhall Vectra 18 Dec 2012 (Forum)
I bought my June '07 1.8 petrol vectra estate in May 2008 with 16k on the clock.  It's now at 137,000 miles and runs as sweetly as ever.  It's true that clutch is juddery when cold, but you learn to compensate.  It is superb on long runs, fast and frugal as well as swallowing my children, labrador and all associated clobber.
  • Vauxhall Corsa B - Low Compression + Running Terrible 7 Sep 2012 (Forum)
Hi all I hope somebody can give me some advice. My Corsa has been running terribly recently. No power when accelerating, EML coming on and car juddering when going 25mph+, trouble starting, starting then stalling, lurching forward and slowing down when accelerating. It hasnt been fun.
  • NA - Revoked Drivers license 19 Jul 2012 (Forum)
So this is a mistake, but I have been driving for 5 years, and have clocked over 100,000 miles up and down the M6 & M1, I must have triggered hundereds of ANPR cameras so why have I never been pulled? In 2010 I was stopped for mistakenly running a running a temporary (road works) set of traffic lights on red, the traffic police checked my credentials out via the ANPR system and It I checked out as being fully legal. I was let off with a warning because I was so polite & apologetic.

  • Pug 306 - Air in fuel system 17 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Hi, My car broke down on me this morning, it ran and then shuddered until it eventually stalled. I got it running a few more times but the same thing happened so it was time to lift the bonnet...  I have a clear pipe running from my fuel filter to the injector pump and I could see lots of air being drawn through as I was turning the car over, and even more so when it was running.
  • Vauxhall Zafira 1.6 Club 2007 - Exhaust emission warning light 4 Jan 2011 (Forum)
In a bit of a panic when any warning light comes on I stopped and checked the owners manual(page 86 & 147), which says:- Control indicator for exhaust Illuminates when the ignition is switched on and during the start attempt. Goes off shortly after the engine starts running. If it illuminates while the engine is running, it indicates a fault in the emission control system. The permitted exhaust values may be exceeded. Seek the immediate assistance of a w ork shop.
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 97 1.8 Diesel expert opinion needed please :-) 30 Jan 2010 (Forum)
I live in Latvia at present and since the weather got to -20c (yes, cold) I am having starting issues. Once started and run for a while, the car performs excellently and starts well all day. Also excellent mpg. I have replaced the battery and glow plugs with new. However, first thing in the morning (cold), on starting, it fires once and then continues to crank for up to a miniute (sometimes longer, thank goodness for the new battery) slowly getting faster and faster and faster until it eventually fires and runs.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - which engine - 1.8 or 2.0? 20 Jan 2010 (Forum)
We'll go petrol because the mileage won't justify diesel, but I'm not sure which engine to go for. I'm thinking the 1.8 or 2.0 because I know the old Zetec-E engine is a tank of a thing which runs forever, whereas the Sigma (1.4/1.6) can have issues as it ages. The only question is which engine to go for. There seems to be precious little in it price-wise, and the 2.0 would seem to be a closer match on power for the Golf than the 1.8, but equally the car is going to spend a lot of time on short runs (I will take it to work once a week to give it a run), so is the 2.0 significantly thirstier than the 1.8 in urban work?
  • Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 99 2.0 My Pug Runs like a Burst couch! 16 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I have a 99 2.0hdi 406 with moon miles on the clock(but been well maintained)....just about everything on it has been replaced at some time...problem is now it has started to run terrible!... It would not drive above 2000rpm on the road and when taken home and inspected it would make it over the 2000 rpm via the cable inside the engine bay being being pulled but it is sending out smoke that u could see for miles...sometimes black and sometimes grey...occasionally clearing itself for 30 secs and then goin back to being "lumpy" again.
  • Buying a VERY low mileage Focus (07 plate) 27 Apr 2009 (Forum)
It has a FSH with the book stamped at 12 months (at just under 4000 miles). However, might mileage this low be a bad thing? E.g. car never run in properly, only ever used for short runs etc... I took the car for a test drive and it felt [unsuprisingly] brand new and very tight. There were a couple of points that made me walk away and sleep on it though. 1.
  • Hit & run - what is the likely outcome? 27 Mar 2009 (Forum)
My car was written off in the early hours of last friday by someone who did a hit and run - we did manage to get a partial reg, and was able to complete it when his car was taken somewhere for repairs privately... I passed the complete reg to the police and insurance company and when I got a call from my insurers to say they were going to DVLA check the other car, that it did have insurance on the vehicle and they would contact the other party, I was pretty pleased.
