  • How do I get better fuel consumption 3 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Scenic dci 120 with approx 6k on the clock. The most mpg I am getting is very low 40's whereas the manual says I should be looking at 38.2 / 56.5 / 48.7...
  • Daihatsu Skywing (like Mk2 Charade) - Car stumbles and looses power 26 May 2019 (Forum)
Improves after about a klick but still hesitates a couple of times during the 20k or so trip and is definately running rough and down on power (which it didn't have a lot of before) going over hump-backed bridges. So I'm thinking 1. Back-flush or change the fuel filter.  (There's an abandoned diesel pump with a replacable-element filter holder on nearby farmland which I might salvage but its been flooded many times so may not come off) (The fuel tank has a drain plug but it doesn't seem possible to do it without getting the fuel dirty, so that'd be a last resort) 2.
  • Calling all engineers and web whizzos? 14 Oct 2002 (Forum)
However, you can only get UNLEADED fuel at a few fuel stations here in the capital, Amman. UNLEADED is simply not available at all outside the capital. So most people just fill up with the 4 star or 2 star that is widely available and cheaper than unleaded to boot.

However, this is almost always quoted in isolation – where’s the like for like comparison for petrol/diesel cars? The oil for these has to be extracted from an oil well, transported to a refinery, petrol produced, shipped to a petrol station, etc. So, how much CO2 per gallon is produced just by getting the oil from under the ground to the petrol station?
  • Any - To those who helped a biker yesterday near Beeston 20 Feb 2019 (Forum)
I wrote off my bike yesterday morning near the junction of the A49 and A534, close to Beeston in Cheshire, due to a patch of spilled diesel.  My riding gear did its job, just a broken little finger and scuffed/chafed knees to show for a 35mph-ish get-off.  The bike unfortunately stopped sliding by hitting the kerb, damaging the frame and fuel tank beyond repair.
  • Volvo S40 (2004 - ) - 06 2.0D Starting problem 16 Jul 2013 (Forum)
I have owned a '56 diesel SE Sport Volvo for 8 months, bought and last serviced by an independent. Almost from first getting the car there were intermittent problems with it starting. These got progressively worse. As the warranty was about to run out I booked the car into the local Volvo garage.
  • Best reliable and economical car for £2000-3000 29 Jan 2012 (Forum)
From what I have read its best to stay away from the newer tdci, cdti, hdi etc... and stick the the old simple diesels, is this true? Also contemplating an LPG are these any and whats the best to go for? Or even petrol jap car just for the reliability although less mpg. Any help or advice would be muchly appreciated.
  • 635 - Old barges 29 Aug 2011 (Forum)
The engine really is a peach, not especially quick by today's standards, but after the unending diet of today's whirring petrols and rattly 4 pot diesels-the sound track of the big six was a welcome change. The L-Jetronic fuel injection system still worked pretty well-settling into a smooth idle after sitting for months. The seats were as comfortable as any that I've sat in, interior beautifully finished, no low rent plastics.
  • Peugeot 206 sw 1.4 hdi 2005 - Unknown peugeot fault code 14 May 2011 (Forum)
I took my 2005 206 1.4 HDI to the garage yesteday as the engine fault light had come on and we were in limp home mode (although limiting a diesel to 3000r.p.m is hardly limping.....)  The garage brought up the fault codes as follows:  P0087 - fuel rail/system pressure too low  P0480 - Cooling fan 1 control circuit malfunction  P0692 - Unknown fault code.
  • Looking for a AWD Estate Car - Your advice sought 13 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Overall I have been very happy with it - it has a nice bit of poke when needed and cruises effortlessly.  The only major issues I have had are the fuel injectors at around 100,000 miles and the ground clearance. I was thinking of replacing it with a similar diesel estate but better ground clearance.  But, having had the second bad winter in a row with (having done some research) a serious possibility of another 7 or so white winters to come, I am thinking of an AWD Estate instead.
  • FIAT Ulysse JTD - HELP please, Fiat JTD (HDI) non starting 9 Oct 2010 (Forum)
I have done the usual stuff with these modern cars - i had a mobile guy come out and scan the car for codes. here is the rather long list he got: P0201 P0202 P0203 P0204 P0121 P0221 P1138 P1108 He said that the top 4 refer to injector codes and said its looking like a fuel pressure problem (i could guess that since its not starting) i am looking at getting the HP pump changed and injectors as the LP pump does deliver diesel through to the filter - checked by the guy and you can hear it buzz under the car.
  • Vauxhall Signum 1.9tdi (120bhp) - V'hall Signum - EGR valve - crystal balls anyone? 7 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Am not mechanically minded, educated guesses sought, please. I have a Signum 1.9 (120) diesel. 56 plate with 54k on the clock. Had the EGR valve replaced yesterday at cost of £217. The mechanic showed me the old valve which was clearly caked in carbon. The HJ review for the car tells me this can be a sign of trouble with the  the secondary butterflies of the swirl actuator valve, that this is an expensive job to fix and frankly times are hard!
  • Chrysler Voyager (1997 - 2001) - 00 2.5 Non Start 23 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Hi All, I have had starting problems with my Voyager (2.5 VM engine). 3 days ago I replaced the glow plugs, started instantly. 24 hours later wouldn't start and flattened the battery. Cracked injectors, lots of fuel. Jumped from other car span over and over for ages, plumes of smoke from exhaust, Unburnt diesel I guess, then for no reason eventually fired up. If used within a few hours, will start OK, leave it for 4-6 hours, same again NON START.
  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 96 1.6 Auto - Died, now won't start 1 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I realize that this is totally vague and no-one is gonna give a prognosis based on this info, but I was just hoping for a few pointers of what it could possibly be (common faults etc) and what to check. Incidentally, our other car is a diesel. She says she is 80% sure she didn't put the wrong fuel in but she is a bit...dippy... Does it sound like this may be it, or is there any way to check? Cheers in advance Minski
  • Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - Getting an LPG conversion 7 Sep 2009 (Forum)
It's costing £1,650 for a multipoint conversion with a Flashlube and courtesy car included. I figure that I need to do it as I simply can't afford to fuel my car at current rates and I have no desire to buy a diesel as I love my smooth V6. So, come on then guys, what's the Backroom good for if not a bit of Doom-mongery? :-) (sp?) What should I be looking out for as it's been suggested to me before that a conversion will give me no end of grief?
  • KIA Cee'd (2007 - 2010) - Just Bought a White Car 14 May 2009 (Forum)
I wonder if 4x4 prices have stabilized after the panic reaction over fuel and VED duty? Or as more folk are caravanning as opposed to jetting off to sunnier climes and do they now need something half decent too tow with? The Sorento is only in the £210 duty band. (ONLY he says!
  • Happy New Year from New Zealand 30 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Makes you realise just how much $$$ our darling UK Government makes off us at the pumps! Clearly the NZ government don't tax fuel (much), but the motorist just has to put up with "challenging" roads. What would you prefer?!
  • Peugeot 206 SW (2002 - 2006) - 04 1.4 car won't fire 9 Oct 2008 (Forum)
(I can actually see air bubbles in the tube where the diesel flows through) I know I will have to take it to a garage as I can't carry on doing this...but has anybody any idea what it is??? Thanks
  • Vauxhall Vectra B (1995 - 1999) - 1998 - drivers seat belt warning light 14 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Hi guys, this my first post. The vehicle is a 1998 Vauxhall Vectra 2ltr DiLS 5 door Hatch with the X20DTL diesel. The seatbelt warning light on the dash does not go off after the seat belts have been connected. After turning ignition switch on, all dash warning lights come on normally, then, after 3 seconds or so, they go out sequentially, starting with engine management, then ABS, fuel and seatbelt.
