635 - Old barges - unthrottled

Took out a rather rare beast today-an old 6 series-with dog leg 5 speed.

Would it live up to expectations?

Yes and no. The engine really is a peach, not especially quick by today's standards, but after the unending diet of today's whirring petrols and rattly 4 pot diesels-the sound track of the big six was a welcome change.

The L-Jetronic fuel injection system still worked pretty well-settling into a smooth idle after sitting for months.

The seats were as comfortable as any that I've sat in, interior beautifully finished, no low rent plastics.

External styling? Blows away anything on the road today. Todays's big coupes just look vulgar in comparison.

The downsides? For a such a huge floorplan, the actual cabin isn't huge-and it's strictly a four seater. The dog leg box was apalling-long throws and vague gates-maybe it was just worn. I doubt the handling was much to write home about. We weren't pushing it hard.

The clock can't be turned back, but for a little while it was nice to pretend!

I had a 635i when it was two years old, it rode quite nicely, handled cleanly and yes, the gear change was sloppy. Lovely looking car, had an auto too. Prefered the XJ6 Coupe but even back then they were as rare as rocking horse output.

For a good barge, I would go for an E34 5 series. The things just don't die - solid body, many panels galvanised. A workmate has a 525i auto H reg, bought for £400, not a spec of rust, the long lasting iron block engine. Year after year he comes to work in it and it never ages, at least not the exterior. Brilliant over engineered cars.

The only weakness is eating their suspension due to their weight, but it's all easy to replace and parts are cheap.

Now you've got to try a new 6 series for comparisons ;-)

The dog leg made it! The unfamiliar shift pattern combined with the sloppy change made driving a bit challenging. Going up is fine, but coming back down is a bear.

The new one just doesn't look as good.

Called "widow makers" in Germany because of their ability togo like hell in straight lines and make families fatherless when trying to go round corners at full speed.

I'd quite happily crash sideways into the Pearly Gates in an original 6 series.
