• BMW Steptronic Gearbox 14 Mar 2006 (Forum)
  Can someone answer a question on the "manual" function of the BMW Steptronic gearbox? In auto it is nice and smooth, but does tend to change up a little too quickly. I have a 3L diesel so it's nice to keep it down for a bit more fun. In sport mode it also seems to change up a little too quickly, so I thought I'd give the "manual" a quick bash.

  I have just bought a 318 tds bmw. it is a 95 model with 100 k on the clock. the engine sounds sweet with a nice diesel rattle, but a little tappet noise on heavy acceleration. there is no evidence of crank case pressure. the engine starts ok from cold when given three blasts with the heater plugs.

  I test drove a 1992 BMW 525 today. Broadly the car looked really good but as I have been driving a manual diesel for the last two years I was left with a few questions. - White came out of the exhaust at start up and while the car was cold and when stopped after only being run for a short time, the car flashed a warning of low coolant.

  This morning on the M40 a small BMW sports car was wedged under an artic between the wheels. I guess a foreign artic because I suppose it didn't have the side bars. I have no idea who was at fault, but there wasn't a whole bunch left of the BMW. 1) If you or yours were in the BMW, then you have my heartfelt sympathy 2) My Landcruiser, whatever else had happened to it, would never have been crushed under the wheels of an artic.

  The car is a 1999 T-reg 318iSE (E46) saloon, with dark blue metallic paint and beige leather interior. It's been owned by me from new, has done 52,000 miles and has a full BMW service history. Interior condition is absolutely 1st class, with practically no marks or damage. The paintwork has a few scratches and paint chip etc, and a few marks from bird droppings; overall I would describe the exterior condition as being good/very good.

  I have recently been out in a German colleagues Audi RS4 Avant which is now pushing out 470bhp (std 380bhp) and I was hooked. I have also noticed that you can buy a 3-4 year old BMW M5 for arounf £25,000 with reasonable mileage, which also sounds a decent price. My concern is service costs, I have done 18,000 miles in the Mondeo since new (6 months old), and so would prefere to stick with a car without a cambelt (my old SEAT Leon TDi had huge cambelt service costs).

  I recently traded in a BMW 318CI for a BMW 325CI. The 318CI was bought used by me from a BMW dealer under the approved used scheme with 10K on the clock. Shortly after I did this I got a letter from Vehicle Mielage Check asking me to confirm the mileage when I bought the car and when I sold it.

  Okay, the story so far: I changed the cylinder head of a BMW 318i after buying it off someone who had overheated it. Turns out that a valve seat had come out of place and so I bought a second hand cylinder head, skimmed it and put it on... Voila! Car started second time after everything was put back together and I was initially quite pleased with my efforts.

  Has anyone had this experience and/or can suggest a cause? I have a 1995ish K reg BMW 320i (E36) coupe auto. I've had 320's before and the handling was always great. So it was on this current car for a while until a few months ago when I started to experience poor handling in the sense that the front wheels seem to skate around on the road when the road is rough.
