BMW Z3 - Electric Roof Not working - Steveieb

Been waiting for the local vehicle electrician to fix my girlfriends electric roof since December.

He came highly recommended and was quoted as being able to repair a faulty hydraulic motor which costs £700.

When he eventually turned up he spent an hour trying to fix it then left saying he needed to check a few things on the internet. All attempts to get him to returnhave failed.

But in carrying out the work we find the multi function stalk does not work. This cintrols the outside temperature etc.

Could he have blown a fue controlling this function, which i could replace and return the car to the State it wa in before hi visit ?

Bit confused here. The pump for the hood is in the boot area and the stalk is on the column.Has he been up behind the dash for any reason? If the mfd works, then I can't see it being a fuse. The stalk only scrolls the menu.

Sorry, my explanation is not too good. The visual display for the clock , outside temperature, mileage in the tank, average mpg, all operated by the stalk is not working since the visit.

Is there anything I can do to get this working before we can get the car to another electrician who has agreed to take a look at the hood.

We have given up trying to contact the first electrian as he will not answer the phone. And have now found that the same thing happened to another customer.

Is it possible that the display is there but you can't see it because the backlight has failed?try shining a torch onto the face of the display

Struggling to find a connection between the roof and the Mfd.Have you checked fuses? If all good, try a battery disconnect for 5 mins.

It probably is the system problem, you do better go to 4s store for checking, or you can check it yourself by Autel MaxiSys Pro MS908P

Now found that the electrician has not only broken the function display for outside temperature, but the roof will not fold down manually.

All attempts by me and also my usual car mechanic have failed .he simply does not answer the phone or when he does he promises to come out, which he never does.

Any idea how I can get the roof to work manually as it jams when I try to fold it back.

Have you tried releasing the T key tap on the hydraulic pump motor. This should reduce the pressure in the system for emergency folding.

Thanks again for such great advice.

Is there a key provided to achieve this and if so where is it kept ? Is it obvious where the release mechanism overide is ?

Really grateful for your advice as i recommended this electrician to my girlfriend and everything has gone wrong since he visited.

Tried moving the outside temperature display in its mounting and it worked momentarily. Is it possible to remove the unit and spray with contact cleaner as the front area appears to fit into the holder and make contact via pins.

The hydraulic release tap/valve is on the pump in the boot.Turn it approx 1/4 turn anti-clock to release pressue. The otg display has probably got a flexible printed circuit that is glued onto the main board.these decay with age and contact is lost.Don't think contact cleaner will fix this.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed. Found another auto electrician that found the problem in a faulty microswitch and was able to repair the temperature display.

saves a trip up to elekie docs workshop !

Found an auto electrician who was able to locate the faulty microswitch and bypass it with a fused link. Now working fine! Thanks for all your help!
