  • Mk2 Golf - Worth keeping? 29 Sep 2003 (Forum)
It is also very easy to accidentally almost put it into reverse without pushing down - it just jumps the gate. I only use the car for going to and from the station, as my other half is learning to drive, and the clutch/lack of power steering make it very learner unfriendly (but I like the car) Decided to keep it in August as it only needed 2 new tires to pass the MOT, and was worth very little to anyone else.
  • How to enforce parking 27 Oct 2018 (Forum)
It is a huge issue for school staff and visitors as road parking is very limited and the public car parks nearby are around £15/day.  We've been told we can't fit a gate due to the complexities of comings and goings and the right of way, so some form of permit parking + enforcement seems to be the only way forward. A fully contracted parking service would be very expensive.
  • kia sorento 2011 - kia sorento 2011 dash display gone haywire 16 Apr 2012 (Forum)
I am abroad at the moment so don't know how up they are on this model as most of their experience is with earlier Sorento. Anyway, got back to where staying this evening and whilst opening gate all displays had returned to normal when i got back in car. Since then I've driven on very bumpy track and also a few road miles, stopped and started three or four times and still o'k. I know it's under warranty but I have a schedule and intended travelling before returning to uk in a month -  it will be four days minimum to get replacement if they have one in country - they have to check part number with uk tomorrow, if part not in country they wouldn't give a time.
  • Jaguar X-Type (2001 - 2009) - manual or auto? 11 Jan 2008 (Forum)
The question is manual or auto on this car, the manual is 5 speed which is fine, not too high a top ratio, and I think the Jaguar "J" gate auto offers a Tiptronic type function? Any thoughts / experiences / comments? Regards.
  • If I had a gun...... 29 Oct 2004 (Forum)
It was chucking it down with rain when I left work two hours late, by which time it is impossible to see the key to lock the gate, which is necessary to stop the carpark being frequented by prostitutes and drug users It would have been nice to have a clean run home but Spurs are playing at Bolton tonight, so there's a bit of traffic about and the dual carriage way outside the Reebok is currently down to one lane in each direction, just to slow things down and there's a bus broken down on the roundabout at one end of that road, just to grind things to a total halt Once past the A6, there is usually very little traffic to impede my progress, but step forward FiestaWoman, whose speed over 3 or 4 miles of almost empty 40 and 30 mph road ranged from 25 to 18 mph.
  • Legal Drivers that shouldn't be! 25 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Now that he is dead, she drives but is a total menace. In the last two weeks she has: (1) Smashed into my friend's gate / gatepost, damaging them and her own Fiesta (2) Scratched, indeed, impaled her Fiesta on her own fence by driving too close to it in an attempt to park on her own, ample, driveway. She has an M reg Fiesta, 1.1 petrol, but she makes it sound like a diesel cum vaccuum cleaner cum tank as she never seems to go beyond second gear!
  • VW gearboxes. 8 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I am the proud ( at the moment ) owner of a 'W' plate Polo 1.9 Sdi. This morning arriving at work i stopped to show my pass to the gate guard, when i engaged first gear and released the clutch the gearbox let out a loud grinding noise as if something had engaged, but not first gear. The guard promptly jumped out of his skin. I immediately depressed the clutch, but the noise continued until the engine revs subsided.
  • Friends now reunited 8 Jun 2010 (Forum)
I`ve discovered that several of my friends are now back home. Tucked away in the Cemetery - behind that mid 19th Century crook on the Iron gate and on the slope that leads to the small wood and pre Beeching branch line - now just a trace on the fields, except by the end of the Cemetery, where there is a secluded wooded area - home of the exceptional tree.
  • Renault Clio - How times have changed with depreciation 29 Sep 2025 (Forum)
I have been looking at buying Renault Clio 1.6 hybrid Techno  , My Budget was £10,000 plus my own car which i bought in March 2017 as a Pre Reg 1.5 Diesel Clio for £11,000 and i have recently been offered £5000 by a company in Gates head call rubber duck car sales, So over the last 8.5 years, I have lost £6000 and this gave me £15,000 to spend on another Clio  I soon found out that i had to increase my budget to buy a decent car and i found a Renault Clio 1.6 hybrid Techno at £17.500 which was around a year old with 6000 on the clock.
  • VW Caddy - automatic gearbox puzzle - how can this happen 20 Mar 2016 (Forum)
[endif]--> A friend of mine told me that she recently rented a VW Caddy automatic. She had to pass through some narrow gates so she stopped the car, put it in neutral and pull the handbrake on and got out of the car to fold back the wing mirrors to pass through the gateway. As she was getting back into the car, with her right foot still on the ground, the car pulled away and went through the gateway trapping her ankle between the door and the cill, badly cutting and scraping it.
  • Mondeo 2ltr, 130, tdci, 56-plate - Gear Changing Problems 10 Dec 2012 (Forum)
By the time I came out of shops and tried to drive away, the problem was getting really bad and it was getting very hard to select a gear. Pulled in at my gate and couldn`t change gears unless i`d switched off engine, then absolutely no problem with clutch pedel down,..let pedal up and car took off in first as normal, but could change out of this gear. Turned engine off again and down with cluth pedal and any gear was available.
  • Chevrolet Captiva - Will I get a driving ban? 26 Mar 2012 (Forum)
I was stopped by the police for driving through a bus gate (I didn't think it applied at 7pm) and was just going to get a fine (no points) until they checked my details and discovered my license had been revoked. So they charged me with driving without a valid license (and later phoned me to add driving without valid insurance as having a revoked license would invalidate my policy) they seized my car and left me to walk home.
  • Motoring to the tip - what rubbish? 1 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Unless that is - I got behind it in the loadbay and levered it out with my feet like one of those dung beetles. Waited another 30 min then for opening. The gates to the compound then swung open and as the `guards` took up position I faced the usual interrogation about `authenticating coupons` that vans large and small have to suffer. "Trade waste? - "no, its a telly...
  • Sensible councillor prevails!!! 20 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Near to where I live is an upper secondary school, pupils from 14 and above, it is sited on one side of a dual carriageway A-road, all the housing is on the other side of the road; and I mean ALL the housing. When the school was built a footbridge was provided right outside the gate to cross the road and barriers provided to prevent pupils crossing the road. Some persisted on jumping these barriers so the council put up additional fences in the wide central reservation to give further discouragement.

  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 99 1.4 Zetec - gearchange problem 13 Dec 2007 (Forum)
i pulled up to a junction normally down the gears, 4-3 then 3-2, then stopped at some lights, as i pulled off normally i went for third and it wouldnt go in. i got the car to the side of the road and called the robbing fellows 'rac' they hauled it back to my house and said it was unusual because they couldnt get it in any gear. normally the five speed box has been slick as any other car ive owned. i limped it back to my other address using 3rd and 4th because i couldnt get it across the gate, eg 2-3 and got my dad to have a look, he was suspecting engine mounts but it wasnt that after checking with jacks etc took it the local garage where he said it was either low on gearbox oil or selector box under gearstick was chuffed. he filled the gearbox up with 2 litres!!!
  • Honest John’s Motoring Agony Column 09-09-2017 Part II 15 Sep 2017 (Forum)
No water pump to replace, don't even need to take the fan/auxilliary drive belt off, though it makes sense to check the condition of it after 90k miles i changed mine for belt and braces, the substantial cambelt only drives the camshaft and its own tensioner nothing else, all timing marks are easily seen. 6x10mm bolts removes the plastic cam cover, turn engine over via crank pulley bolt to align timing marks, 2 bolts sees the tensioner off, 1 bolt holds the idler wheel in place, replace idler wheel and tensioner, slip cambelt on, check timing marks are still in line (making sure the belt is not slack on its long run), remove grenade style clip holding tensioner spring back, belt is now tensioned, check once again timing marks are correct and you can always turn the engine over via the crank pulley bolt two revolutions to double check, refit cover, make cup of tea and acknowledge yet another brilliant design by Mr T's excellent engineers. Landcruiser with 3 litre is same engine, I changed my own with a Gates full kit including new tensioner @ around £80, takes the aforesaid 1 hour first time, next time i reckon 40 minutes tops. All cambelt drives should be designed like this. I'd also dispute the auto box not being good, please try one for yourself, preferably in a 3 litre Hilux HL3 or Invincible spec.
  • Nissan Patrol GR SE (1998) 2.8Td - Warm start problems on a Diesel Turbo 3 Aug 2012 (Forum)
It appears to be lacking power in low revs which has been diagnosed as a possible Actuator issue (also called tail-gate?), a part I have not managed to source. It has now also developed a fault with starting problems when the motor is WARM.
  • Do insurance companies write off cars too easily? 10 May 2011 (Forum)
Unfortunately, two weeks ago, the car spun at a roundabout, hit the kerb, then demolished a metal gate and fence. No one was injured. The car was recovered to our house. To me the damage looked fixable. Last Friday, the insurance company declared it a 'Cat C' write off. We asked for it back, and it was delivered back on Tuesday this week.
  • Local colour (a leaf out of oilrag's book) 1 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Nearby at the top of Barlby Road, the hole that was made in the wall and fence to get at that train crash a few years back has been formalised as a locked gate... ready for next time (God forbid). A couple of hundred yards back down Barlby Road is Rootes Avenue, beside the Rootes Group offices - originally Sunbeam I think, built 1903 - where I went for parts in the seventies for my Singer Vogue.
