  • Tyres (all makes) 24 Dec 2004 (Forum)
He told me that the Perillies were designed specifically for the Jaguar (hence the J marking next to P6000 on the sidewall), and that they were different from other tyres as they had re-enforced sidewalls, on a car with a weight and power such as this, at motorway speeds the sidewalls start to deform slightly, leading to tramlining, which can be very dangerous. The cost of the whole incident was 2 (refurb alloys from our local specialist at 50 pounds a shot, since the tyres were almost new and 80 pounds each, and thus could be used as a spare instead of the space saver), and two new perilli 6000's from the tut tutting gent, who i must say has been fab.
  • rover 216 cutting out & erratic idling 12 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I am sure that if I take it back to the garage they will not be able to re-create the problem and may not find the cause. It has been suggested to me that it might be moisture getting into the HT leads. The car c1997 with 82k miles. Sorry for the long post. I look forward to your thoughts. cheers Andy
  • 16 Volt Battery Problem 22 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Put it back on a very low charge and slowly it crept up to 15.5 volts and still rising. Now I’ve fitted, tested, built charges, and used lead acids for 40 years and I can honestly say that I have never seen a normal battery go to that voltage unless it has been faulty or old, both implying a high internal resistance. This battery is not typical of a high internal resistance as disconnecting it only allows it to fall to 15.5 then it very slowly falls to 13.4.
  • Labour rates top £150 per hour 19 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Mazda has the lowest average labour bills of £44 followed by Nissan, Seat, Fiat and MG Rover on £46. Lexus leads the table with the most expensive average charge of £78 an hour, £1 more than Mercedes, £3 more than Jaguar and £5 more than Porsche. Although initiatives introduced by the European Commission last October were aimed at encouraging cheaper repair and servicing bills, Warranty Direct says labour rates at franchised dealers have increased 8% in the last year and 71% since 2000

I can't recommend Steve enough. For those who want to know). Change of all fluids following full flushing etc, new plugs and leads, other ignition parts etc and then we will see how that goes. Should I go for a semi synth oil at the service? Its still on its original tyres so those have got to go. I am thinking of Michelin Energy tyres, I can get them at Costco, fitted for about £38.00 each (165*65*13), how does that sound?
  • Alternator Problems?? 26 Jun 2002 (Forum)
I have now brought the car back to my house to solve this problem, having driven 80miles (crrying a spare battery and jump leads), and it doesn't seem to bad, taking only 3-4 amps on the battery charger. Clearly something is wrong, but what? I am stuck on... cheers Neil T SEAT Leon TDi 150
  • Ruined battery ? 12 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I have an 'entertaining' '91 BX 16v which is currently burning a rather large hole in my pocket. Latest thing to go wrong is a reluctance to start - I've changed leads, dizzy cap and plugs and hoped that it would now burst into life at the merest hint of the key being turned in the ignition (as my old corolla used to), but to no avail - I still have to crank it for several seconds before it catches and finally explodes into action.
  • TBD - What next (after a Volvo XC40) 24 Jun 2024 (Forum)
We are paying eye watering monthly payment albeit for a fabulous car, but job changes since 2021 and approaching retirement lead me to ask ... (before handing over a large balloon payment to Volvo for a 4 year old car), what else is out there that we could get for less money. Having been spoilt rotten with all the features this car has, there are a few we would NOT want to do without, some I would not even consider very high end, yet don't seem to appear as often as you would think, others are high end.
  • Crow Trouble 4 Oct 2023 (Forum)
I did not harm the not so little black chick but was just curious as it was hopping along terrified I suppose. Well eventually humandad came out with the lead and escorted me in. So for the last few days a sit at the patio window watching a two legged black crow strut around while it develops its flight feathers and is feed and guarded by its parents.  Even the local cats seem afraid of the parents have tried stalking the chick and failed..
  • Dropped kerb 19 Nov 2021 (Forum)
My question is does he have the right to tell people they can’t use the dropped kerb? Does he own the dropped kerb and the footpath leading from/to it? His wording was very particular in the way he said “I haven’t spent £2500 for everybody to use MY DRIVE”. Is the dropped kerb and footpath “his drive”? Is it his land, his property?
  • Volkswagen Polo - '57 plate VW Polo brakes issue - faulty ABS? 12 Feb 2019 (Forum)
If my ABS unit is one of these models, is there any way for me to get some form of goodwill from VW on this? The fact that "everything points to the ABS unit" leads me to believe that they know in advance this is a dodgy unit. Can anyone give me some advice here?
  • Vauxhall Zafira A - Loss of instruments, charging suspect 1 Jun 2018 (Forum)
No sign of damp or corrosion (ppl report this) and the relay box. Unbolted earth con to body and joins in battary leads, and cleaned and refitted, no sign of corrosion or bad connections.  Raditor fan connections inconvenient to access, and the alternator looks a right pain to get to, probably have to take the radiator out and go through the front!
  • Used tall car for tall driver 28 Apr 2018 (Forum)
My priorities are comfort and space and I'd like an "upright" driving position as since touring in a Toyota Coaster mobile home I've discovered this to be much more comfortable and better for my back than the "legs out in front" position in most cars.  I'm 6'6" tall unfortunately which has lead to problems as even large SUV/Crossovers don't seem that much bigger inside than smaller models (the car grows but not the space for the driver). We didn't initially fancy an MPV but I sat in a Ford S-Max yesterday and it did seem more roomy and comfortable and the visibility was a lot better than the Cross/SUVs we tried (Mazda CX-5, Qashqai, VW Touareg, Ford Kuga etc).

With the outside handle been loose could that have broken from the mechanism, and would that lead to the inside handle not working? Am I probaly going to have to replace the whole locking mechanism and if I get a second hand one is there any reprogramming or anything involved, or is it just a straight swap?
  • Ford Fiesta - Ford Fiesta lack of power - possibly catalytic con 9 Jan 2016 (Forum)
It's not misfiring - I dI'd have a few issues with misfiring early-mid last year where the coil pack, spark plug and HT leads all decided to go on separate occasions.   I was told by a large chain garage that they think the exhaust pressure seems low so they are guessing it's the catalytic converter needs replacing.

The battery went flat over Christmas and a lot of condensation accumalated inside the car.  When I tried to start it up using jump leads it seemed like there was smoke coming out of the vents.  After that i could drive it but the dials were not working, eventually they came back on there own, but were erratic at times.  After a few days I had to jump start it again and this time the engine turned over but was very 'lumpy' perhaps misfiring and under powered.
