  But by retrospectively applying CO2 tax to existing cars bought as long ago as March 2001, the Treasury gets a virtually guaranteed income. Maybe not from the same owner who can’t afford to run it any more and had to take a massive depreciation bath when he sold it. But from someone, because unless the car gets scrapped or exported, will still be here and someone will have to pay the tax on it.

  The Jaguar E-Type was built in the mid-1970s for the Modsports race series of the time and is based on a 1961 flat floor coupé. Reportedly one of the quickest E-Type racers running in its day, it also took part in the Brighton Speed Trials in 1977 and 1978 and was last raced in the late 1970s before being placed in storage. The car was to sustain damage to its paintwork during the hurricane of 1987 when the roof was blown off the building it was stored in, and consequently the car is offered requiring some refurbishment and restoration.

  The problem was that the six-cylinder engine was physically a long engine and there were considerable problems in installing the unit in the P6 bodyshell without resorting to changes to the bodywork in order to accommodate it. In a move pre-dating Audi by some ten years, the Research department run by Brian Sylvester, actually engineered a 2.5-litre five-cylinder version of the engine in order to get over these problems. Edward Eves of Autocar actually owned one of these prototypes, which survives today (in the hands of an enthusiast member of the Rover Sport Register), and reported that the in-line six version of the P7 was impressive and considered it equal to the later Buick engined version.
