Disappointing

We bought this car to replace a Ford Fiesta ST Mountune, which was very fast (and surprisingly economical) but just too uncomfortable for day-to-day driving. But what a disappointment the Polo GTi is; it is very fast and easy to drive, as well as being very comfortable but the DSG gearbox is a shocker. This is the 7-speed box but even in 'normal' drive mode it is schizophrenic; constantly changing gear, which is tiresome to say the least. Also, it has a coast mode, which it goes into at every opportunity but as soon as you press the brake or accelerator pedal it engages a gear with an annoying jolt. My wife likes the gearbox but give me a manual any day of the week.

The fuel economy is a bit of a puzzle; returning 40+ mpg on a reasonable run but around town, 28 (ish) is the best you can expect (and that's in eco mode) and with current prices, this is not acceptable.

However, the most disappointing aspect is the interior space. I really cannot understand the reviews which state that it is spacious and can fit '4 large adults with ease' - really??? Even with the seat as close as I can bear to drive (I am 187cms), my 12-year old son struggles to sit behind the seat. In order to fit my legs under the steering wheel, I have to lower the seat as far as possible (this is with the steering wheel in its highest position), and then my son can't get his feet under my seat (and will knee me constantly as a reminder). It's the opposite of a tardis frankly. We also own a Suzuki Swift which genuinely does fit '4 large adults with ease'. The Polo was meant to be our family car but we can't retire the Swift just yet!

My wife moans that I get bored of cars very quickly but this is singly the most disappointing car we have owned.

By the way, the dealer that sold us the car (Motorline - Horsham) was excellent.
