Engaging to drive, stylish and all round good fun, but there are caveats.

It's quite rare for someone to say that, after almost four years of ownership, they still actually derive enjoyment from driving their car. However, for me, getting behind the wheel of the Z4 is still a pleasurable experience.

In my opinion it's a stylish car and one which is engaging to drive. I opted for the 2.0i SE largely because it struck the right balance between performance and affordability. Though it's the entry-level model, it's plenty quick enough.

The cockpit is refined and it's a comfortable place to be, even on long journeys. Don't get me wrong, I often bemoan the lack of boot space, but generally speaking it's a practical day-to-day car – well, as practical as you could hope a two-seater convertible to be!

There are caveats, though.

There is a well-documented design fault, which can lead to the motor that powers the power hood failing due to water ingress. Unfortunately, I am speaking from first-hand experience – and it’s not straightforward or economical to have this remedied.

In addition, I would strongly recommend sticking to premium fuel when you visit the pumps. I was using ordinary unleaded petrol (i.e. 95) consistently for a few months and the exhaust emissions light eventually appeared.

If this happens, and there are no other indications of a problem present, try switching to a performance fuel (e.g. Shell V-Power, BP ultimate, etc.) and the light should, after a couple of weeks (depending on usage), disappear.

I have personally opted to replace the run-flat tyres with non-run-flats – a risk, admittedly, but the benefit is a much smoother ride. And, of course, non-run-flats are significantly cheaper.
