Peugeot 405 Diesel - My car ticks like a metronome. HELP!! - Colin Wiggz

I have a Peugeot 405 Turbo N Reg. Diesel that has started making a loud ticking noise behind the glove compartment. It is as loud and as regular as a metronome and ticks 7 times over approx 7 seconds and stops for about 7 seconds before re-starting. It can be stopped by pressing the interior air re-circulation button on the dash. The car has air conditioning.

It has been looked at by both an AA patrolman and my local Peugeot Dealer neither have ever heard of a fault like this before.

Has anyone else heard of such a fault?

Kind Regards

Colin

A faulty indicator switch can give this problem on an XM, try giving it a good work out.

Hi Peter,

Not sure if you mean the blinker indicator switch but if you do the noise is considerably louder than the standard indicator switch. Another puzzle is it stops when the air re-circulation button is activated.

Thanks Colin.

I suggest you change your garage as the answer above gives the reason a very common fault.Or the agents is politley saying take it elsewhere as the repair cost by them would be more than the cars worth.

Hi madf,

When I first called the AA patrolman when he couldn't figure it out got in touch with AA tech resources who said they hadn't come across a similar problem. He had checked the air conditioning switch and it kept ticking whether dash switch was on or off. Aircon still works fine.

It was Peugeot Garage that found that re-circulation switch when on - stopped the ticking. The switch you mention is it the one on the dash that needs replacing or elswhere? Is it expensive or could I get one from local car dismantler?

I had the car from 50,000 miles and its been superb no problems at all and its now at 125,000 miles and got through it's MOT with no problems. Best Car I've ever owned.

I once worked as a garage mechanic in the days of Jaguar MK9 and Renault Dauphine 1958.

Andy,

The Garage is a Peugeot Garage and they are prepared to investigate but not even the old-timers at the garage had ever heard such a noise before.

Thanks for all the advice.

Colin

This noise is from the air re-circulation flap motor. It is located behind the dash, above and to the left of the glovebox. The clicking noise is the ratchet jumping over the teeth of the flap drive cog.The best, and cheapest solution is to get it disconnected. However access is from glove box but a little awkward. It does not affect the operation of heater or a/con.The operation of the flap is visible from the engine bay, rear bulkhead area,if you remove the plastic air intake cover and pollen filter below .hth

Hi elekie&a/c,

That certainly sounds like the problem. I'll report back tomorrow.

Thanks

Colin.

Hope you get it sorted. I share your view, I reckon the 405 td estate is the best value for money available now, it drives and rides nicely, doesn't go rusty and you can repair it! I have got several of these for my friends. I run XMs but if I couldn't the 405 would be my choice - I reckon they should start making them again!

Thanks guys,

I printed a copy of elekie&a/c's reply and took it to my local Peugeot this morning and booked it in for this afternoon.

I was quoted £45.00 plus VAT per hour for however long it took. The job was completed within half an hour and the bill came to £26.43 inc. VAT so I was delighted.

Done by the book and a new motor fitted the new motor alone would have cost me an extra £600.00 +

Certainly glad I found Honest John's website which is now in my favourites.

Many Thanks again for all your help and advice.

Colin.
