Could you recommend a more economical replacement for my wife's Subaru Forester?

My wife is using a Subaru Forester XT 2.5 auto which we bought in 2009. I anticipated that the annual mileage would be around 6000, but in fact it's double that due to two 30 or 40 mile round trips per week, so fuel consumption is higher than anticipated. We do tow a caravan (1500kg) and live high up so have 4WD for bad weather and road poor conditions. I have a Citroen C5 which my wife won't drive. I have thought about exchanging the Subaru for the new Kia Sorento X3 diesel auto 4WD and buying a smaller runaround for my wife to replace the C5. She likes the Mercedes-Benz A-Class whilst I prefer the Citroen C4 range. Any advice on vehicle selection or alternatives would be appreciated.

The new Sorento and Santa Fe are both video tested at HJUK. There's nothing too wrong with the current A-Class, though the CVT autos can give up eventually. Alternatives include the Kia Venga 1.6 auto and the Nissan Note 1.6 auto.
