I need an economical automatic with a large boot as a company car - what do you recommend?

I retire at the end of November and will be handing back my company car – a 2008 Audi A3 Sportback 2.0TDi Automatic. This is my third A3; the previous was a 2.0FSi Auto. I estimate I will do about 10,000 miles a year, but since at least 60 per cent of the mileage will be in France, a diesel should still be an option, as well as the need for economical cruising at 130kmh for the autoroutes. Based on the Audi driver's information readout in the car, I achieved an average 33mpg with the 2.0FSi, and with the 2.0TDi I am getting 48mpg. I think my budget will about £20,000 and I will be looking for a new car in March. As well as the automatic requirement and a need to have similar boot/seats down space (hatchback?), the running costs (insurance, road tax, servicing) will be a main consideration. What options should I consider?

For 10,000 miles a year, the repair costs of a diesel DMF, DPF, turbo and EGR over six years can vastly exceed any saving on fuel. I'd look at a Toyota Avensis 1.8 or 2.0 Valvematic M-drive CVT auto. They're almost as low CO2 and almost as economical as a diesel, without the potential repair costs. It’s also British-built, so does not suffer the current supply problems of Audis.

Good choice of engines. Some petrol engines now chain cam. Comfortable and well built interior. cheap to run 1.6 TDI. Feels very refined especially on the motorway.
Hugely practical and robust, refined and quiet on the move, excellent diesel engines, especially the 2.0 D-4D, very reliable.
