Got a problems with a used car - what are my rights?

I bought a 2012 Volkswagen Passat two weeks ago from an independent dealer. I took it to a Volkswagen dealership today to replace the cam belt (it has 80k on the clock) and have been told the front discs and pads are almost worn out. The EGR valve is also leaking. Can you tell me where I stand legally?

I've looked at the new legislation which states that the vehicle should be of 'satisfactory quality', but it also says age and mileage should be taken into account. I'm just a bit concerned that they may say this fault is due to the age and mileage of the car. What do you think?

Well that's not very "satisfactory" is it? A lot boils down to what you paid, but if you paid £4k or more then the dealer is liable for any major fault present or developing on date of sale for six months from date of sale: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/
