Buying a family crossover - which model is best?

I am looking for a small crossover or spacious hatch for a family of three, soon to grow. The new Honda HR-V diesel drives very well, but is it fully worth its price? Any other suggestions? I am doing 14-16k per year and reliability is top priority.

Also, how is depreciation estimated for new car models? For example the Renault Kadjar is highly rated in the motoring press, but its residuals are lower than competition.

I've got an HRV and it's brilliant. 60mpg. Handles decently. 60mpg. Don't buy any new car unless you can get it at a substantial discount, then do your sums based on the discounted price, not the list price.
