Need a used family car suitable for low annual mileage

I am planning to buy a used car mainly for my wife to use and I would appreciate your advice.

Her annual mileage is about 3000 miles and mostly involves the commute to work (six miles) and city driving. We have a small child so I am considering a five door hatchback for access and for ease of storing the usual child related equipment.

The budget is about £8000 and I would prefer a car that is not more than two years old, that will be reliable, is suitable for short runs and finally that I will be be able to fit Into and drive if needed (I'm 6'4").

Toyota Auris HSD, if you can find one. All the decent used Prius have now been snapped up by taxi drivers and prices have risen substantially.
