Mitsubishi Shogun won't engage gears - what's the fault?

Yesterday my 2002 Mitsubishi Shogun was running absolutely fine. Today, I came out and the gears felt a little stiff. Now I cannot get it into drive at all. Any ideas?

Most likely to be the safety catch that prevents the engine being started when not in drive. There might be a separate button to release it so the car can be parked in neutral.
