Toyota RAV4 - is auto or manual best?

Are there any problems with automatics Toyota RAV4a? I will not be going off road but do live in rural North Wales so do get snow in the winter.

Less control in the snow, but generally more pleasant to drive and unless used to tow the autobox will generally outlast the clutch of the manual. Two types. 2.0 Valvematic petrol CVT auto (which can't be used for towing) and 2.2 diesel torque converter auto. The petrol CVT is nicer to drive and economy is not much different from the diesel.
