Buying a new SUV - petrol or diesel?

I am in the market for a new SUV and have narrowed my search to the Ford Kuga or Toyota RAV-4 4. The salesman at Ford has told me a diesel would not be for me as my car would be laid up for weeks at a time therefore could have particulates problems, while the salesman at Toyota said that given I don't use the car for weeks at a time he would still suggest a diesel. I mentioned particulates problems but he said this is not a problem with Toyotas. What do you suggest I do?

Go for the RAV-4 2.0i Valvematic Multidrive-S 4WD. By far the nicest RAV-4 to drive as well as the most reliable, with economy and CO2 virtually identical to a diesel auto.
