Need an economical car for towing a horse box

I currently drive a 2010 Defender 90 which has the most expensive road tax. I drive about 25 miles a week to the supermarket and once a week to take the large 650kg horse to the beach again about a round trip of 20 miles. Is there any other car that would be cheaper to run?

Horse and trailer probably don't weigh more than a combined 2000kg, so virtually any medium 4WD should be able to tow it. A Suzuki Grand Vitara 5-door diesel can tow 2000kg, has the advantage of low range gears and a locking centre diff and is VED Band K, so £285pa to tax. But if you can afford £27k, a new KIA Sorento 2.2 R-Type diesel K2-X Nav manual is currently on offer at £27,000, can tow 2500kg and at 155g/km comes in at £180 a year to tax.
