Can you recommend a wheel and tyre combination for my 2008 Audi A3 to improve the ride?

I have an Audi A3 2.0 TDI S-line 2008 and have been very happy with its frugality (some of it due to the driver) and gadgets. But the car is pretty hard on the road and two damaged tyres have cost me dearly to replace. It has 225/40 ZR 18 92Y tyres and I have seen some of your advice on adopting smaller wheels and deeper (and cheaper) tyres in order to enhance the comfort. Could you recommend a suitable upgrade for this car, please.

www.tyremen.co.uk can supply you with a set of four TUV-approved Alutec 5 stud 16-inch alloys with a 5-year warranty for £335 inc, then fit some 205/55 R16 tyres. I found Toyo J48s that size to be brilliant. If you make the 'modification' you have to tell your insurer.
