Is there a way of repairing a puncture at the roadside without ruining the tyre?

Most new cars, like my wife's Zafira Tourer, are not provided with a spare tyre, and only a canister of material that will give a temporary repair to a puncture, but in doing so, will ruin the tyre. Is there a canister of material available, on general sale, which will repair the puncture and not ruin the tyre?

'Slime' is water based. The problem is that inspecting a tyre carcass for damage takes far longer than replacing a tyre. So unless you are prepared to pay, say, £50 a time for a thorough inspection of the tyre carcass, with the risk that damage might be found and you might have to replace the tyre anyway, it makes more economic sense for the tyre depot to simply replace the tyre.
