Why does my insurance company insist that I have a hire car if mine is off the road?

I am a retired 73 year old and do around 4000 miles a year maximum. I have protected NCD. When I renew my motor insurance I tell them that I don't need a hire car should mine be off the road (I can use the free buses instead). They say I have to pay for it whether I want it or not and cannot opt out. Is this true of all car insurance companies or are there any that would offer me a discount?

Reads to me that this is a broker-bought policy and that this term benefits the broker rather than you. Basically he will get commission from the credit hire outfit that puts you into a car while yours is being repaired. Remember, most car insurance price comparison sites are usually brokers and to get a true picture you have to compare quotes from different price comparison sites.
