Should you give the V5C to a prospective buyer?

I recently sold a car on eBay. The buyer (prospective at the time) asked me to send him a copy of the log book (V5C) so that he could ascertain the legality of my ownership. I felt uneasy although I am aware that he probably just wanted to do a HPI check.

I asked the DVLA what their stance was one this and they refused to give any advice. I eventually sent the log book and then sold the car to the person in question. What are your views on this?

It would give him all the details of the car so he could use a Form V62 to apply for a V5C for the car as if he had bought it even though he hadn't. But DVLA processes should not accept this unless it has received a signed section 1-8 of the original V5C. You only give sections 9-11 to the new keeper.
