Why won't LV Insurance let me use a cheaper windscreen repairer than the one they recommend?

I recently suffered an unrepairable crack to my Peugeot 206 windscreen and, unsure if it was worth claiming on my insurance, I called two companies to get an idea of repair costs. Autoglass quoted £454.72 (discounted to £323.84) for replacement against Silver Screen's £114. When I called my insurer, LV, I was advised that Autoglass was the approved repairer and that if I chose anyone else, the maximum they would pay before excess was £100. To match Silver Screen's price, Autoglass would have to offer LV a 75 per cent discount, which seems unrealistic to me. But for LV not consider using an alternative supplier is equally odd. I have an uncomfortable feeling that insurers and Autoglass have a cosy relationship which isn't always in the interest of the consumer, perhaps akin to credit hire? What do you think?

That's weird because LV is generally regarded and proven to be one of the best insurers. Autoglass will, of course, deny your allegation. So I'll run your email and see what feedback I get from other readers.
