Handing over the Mike

My elderly mother needs to replace her Nissan Micra variomatic as it is getting a bit long in the tooth. She needs a similar car, small but roomy enough for three in the back, automatic and with a good view of the front of the car from the driver's seat. The driving position needs to accommodate drivers from 5' 0" to 6' 4". Should she be looking at another Micra or is there a better option? It is easy enough to find a good small car, but the problem is knowing whether the automatic options are any good, as the usual car-choosing literature does not cover this. Can you help?

The new Micra K13 has gone back to CVT, so is a bit more like your mother’s car than the previous generation K12 Micra: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/nissan/nissan-micr.../ And www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/nissan/micra-dig-s.../ But there is a lot of competition now. She should take a look at a KIA Picanto 1.2 auto and a Hyundai i10 1.2 auto. www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/kia/kia-picanto-20.../ If they are too small, then also the much bigger Honda Jazz 1.4CVT-7 auto. www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/honda/jazz-2011-an.../ The most fun is the Mazda 2 1.5 Activematic www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/mazda/mazda-2-auto/
