What can I replace my Toyota RAV4 with that offers better fuel economy?

The home of my family necessitates me travelling over the Pennines on the A66 from Co. Durham often, including in the winter. I have a 5-year-old 4WD Toyota RAV4 which I love, but its petrol consumption is poor, though its winter performance is great. I'd like to renew the car next year, but cannot afford a new RAV4 and wonder if you know of any other 4WD with a similar good winter track record, which is cheaper to buy and has better fuel consumption

Toyota Urban Cruiser 1.4 D-4D. Cheap to tax as well (only 130g/km).

Chunky and quirky looks. A rare sight on UK roads. 1.4 D-4D AWD surprisingly enjoyable to drive.
