Credulust - the credit hire scam

Back in December 2008 I was involved in a minor road accident. A white van reversed into my stationary car damaging the front. The driver admitted liability at the time and this was confirmed in writing at a later date.

I informed my insurance company, Saga, the same day and they made arrangements for my car to be taken to a repairers of their choice and for me to be supplied with a car for my use in the mean time. To me this is what I understood my insurance covered me for.

Now nearly 2 years later and 'out of the blue' I have received what I feel are intimidating and bullying letters from a firm of solicitors indicating that the car I was issued with has not been paid for and on behalf of 'Helphire' they are trying to recover the costs and I being the one who signed for the car when it was delivered to my home could be liable for this.

These solicitors have been allocated to me and I'm informed I may not go elsewhere. The amount claimed seems to be totally excessive in relation to the time I used the car and the cost of the repairs. I understand you have recently dealt with this problem in your column but I did not see this and wonder what the advice would be.

This is the infamous 'credit hire' scam that I have been warning against for the past 3 years. Insurers are clamping down on excessive hire car charges that can be exaggerated by extending the period of repair or putting the driver in a very expensive hire car.

I've heard of bills of £29,000, £32,000 and £40,000 just for the hire car. But by signing the form you inadvertently rendered yourself liable. You now need proper legal defence to fight off these charlatans.
