I'm confused about hire purchase and other options

I am getting increasingly confused about the different options available for someone who can't afford to buy a car outright immediately.

I am starting a new job in January that will change my daily commute from 20 town miles to 100 miles on a motorway or A-road. I have little confidence in my 2001 1.6 Ford Focus LX, and want something small, comfortable, reliable and economical. I have been thinking about 2-3 year old 1.2-1.4 TDI Polo, Yaris, Ibiza etc.

I am looking for some sort of agreement where I dont't have to worry about MOTs, servicing, VED, new tyres, or even insurance. I know it's very optimistic, and I realise that I will have to shoulder some of the responsibilities mentioned.

The prospect of owning the vehicle at the end of the agreement doesn't matter to me, I will be happy to not own a car for the next 2-4 years but I would like to keep the overall cost of motoring down as much as possible, say £400 per month.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I do hope you can offer some advice.
