Does the insured main driver of a car also have to be the owner?

My wife has a car in her name on the V5C. The insurance is in her name as the main driver with me and our daughter as additional named drivers. Unfortunately my wife is no longer physically able to drive a car and her licence has run out. Can I renew the insurance with me as the main named driver (and our daughter as a named driver) while leaving my wife as owner on the V5? Or, should I transfer the car anyway into my name on the V5 to avoid any possible future difficulties with the insurance company should I need to make a claim?

Yes, you can transfer the policy to yourself and keep your daughter as a named driver, as the main driver doesn’t have to be the owner, just who drives the car most often. When taking out car insurance, you should be asked who is the owner of the car - in which case you should declare that your wife owns the car.
