What can I do to get cheaper insurance for my 95 year old dad?

My dad turned 95 in July and he just got his insurance renewal. He has a five-year-old Vauxhall Corsa and does 500 miles a year max. His premium has gone from £900 to £2400. I know no-one wants to insure at his age but a fiver a mile is pretty steep but he definitely does value his independence and the psychological benefit of being able to drive even when he does very little. I wondered if you had any suggestions as to who may offer a better price though?

Prices are increasing for many drivers at the moment and this is down to the fact that claims are not only more frequent, but are costing insurers more to cover too. And different insurers will rate drivers differently based on their level of risk which will be reflected in their price. There may be another insurer out there that can offer a cheaper price, so the best thing to do initially is to use a price comparison site like Confused.com to shop around for different policy options and see if there is another insurer offering a better price. However, given that your dad isn’t driving very often, there may be alternative options for him. For example a pay-as-you-go policy. This is a rolling contract where what you pay is calculated on the number of miles you do and could offer a cheaper price than a full annual policy. Alternatively, depending on how often he is using his car, a temporary policy for a shorter period of time could also work out cheaper.
