I damaged another car without realising

About a week ago I was reversing out of a sports centre car park. I thought I may have scraped the car next to me. I got out, had a look, there didn't appear to be any damage, so I headed off.

A week later, back at the same car park, where we are every week, the owner of the car that had been next to me came up and said that I had scratched their car the previous week, a witness had seen me. They had reported it to the police in order to track me down for insurance. I apologised for any inconvenience or misunderstanding and provided my contact details.

When I got home, I immediately contacted my insurance company. Theirs had already been in touch and the insurance companies are now dealing with that side of things.

However, I have since received a letter from the police asking that I verify that I was driving and listing a set of possible charges:

- dangerous driving
- driving without due care and attention
- driving without reasonable consideration
- failure to stop and report

I will, of course, respond that I was driving at the time. However, I'd like to understand what next? Should I provide a covering letter to my response explaining?

The damage cannot have been serious as when I looked there didn't appear to be any. That said, the other party has no reason to lie that I can see, so it may be that I missed something. For the purposes of my question, let's assume that is the case.

There was no intention to evade this on my part. The damage will be taken care of by my insurance company and I have a protected no claims bonus, so there is no real impact on me, so I had no real reason to evade.

Having read a number of other threads on the subject my understanding is that the failure to stop and report is the charge most likely to proceed. Can you advise what next?

Tell the police what you have told me. All you have received is an automated form and the process will continue in an automated way unless you can stop it.
