Why would removing additional driver increase my insurance premium?

I've just renewed my insurance for my Skoda Fabia estate and wanted to remove an additional driver. The resulting quote went up from £218 to £288. It seems crazy. Neither of us has any history of claims, offences or relevant medical conditions and are of similar age. The figure was checked with two separate people at the call centre and neither could give me a reason. Can you explain?

Insurance is calculated on risk so for the policy to go up the underwriter would assume the risk would increase. If your friend has a longer no claims bonus than you that may have had an impact on the quote.
