Rustoration work

I would appreciate your advice on a problem I have with my Toyota Celica. Nearly four years ago I had a small accident with a lorry that left a big dent in my nearside rear bodywork. Instead of going to the insurers approved repairer I opted for a Toyota approved repairer. The job was done and looked good, no problems, or so I thought. About four months ago I notice the paint coming off round the wheel arch and spots of rust appearing. Inside the door, where the panel had been joined, there were big bubbles of rust coming through from underneath. A friend reckoned it had not been sealed around the wheel arch and water was getting behind the paint. Also the door sill joint could be structural. I took it to the original repairer, who said, "It's only surface rust. We can just rub that down and spray it over." It would cost £540 but they would pay half. Admission of guilt? I want the panel replaced but can't find any way of getting it done without paying it myself. The insurer said No, No, No. Toyota said the same. I contacted the MVRA but they have not helped. I got in touch with Trading Standards who passed me on to Consumer Direct who passed me on to the Financial Ombudsman who said "nothing I can do." Finally Trading Standards are trying to help. I have taken the car to two independent repair shops, both of whom have been horrified at the bad job and are writing reports that I can use to sue the garage should I need to, but its all taking so long. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Had you used the insurer's approved repairer, then the insurer would have had to rectify it. But, because you insisted on the Toyota Approved repairer, this isn't your insurer's responsibility. However, if Toyota has approved him, then Toyota should withdraw its approval of him because his workmanship in not up to standard. Take the matter up with Toyota and the threat might be enough to force him to do a proper job
