On yer bike

My grandson (almost 21) has been driving for three years without claiming. He has been a student at various air schools and just qualified as a commercial pilot. Due to the economic downturn, he is unable to secure a position with an airline and is therefore unemployed whereupon his insurance company has announced that as he is now a high-risk driver the premiums are to be increased around three fold. According to him, most other insurance companies seem to follow suit. I contacted mine (Prudential) who claim not to operate this policy but tried to explain the reasons for 'other' companies doing so. One was to
discourage unemployed people from going out and buying a car - another was that in becoming unemployed they will be unable to meet the premiums. Both explanations seem to be straight out of 'Alice in Wonderland'. His own company has seemingly given an explanation which is incapable of being understood. I would assume that unemployed young drivers, in having less money, would have driven less not more. There is little difference in the financial status of my grandson from when he was a student to his current position as he did not have a wage before. I am unemployed through being retired but my premiums did not escalate in fact, they did not change. If companies assume that being unemployed young male drivers are likely to spend their days in reckless driving then they should be honest enough to say so. Why are they so secretive?

There must be a greater underwriting risk attached to an unemployed driver of employable age. But 3 x the premium reads excessive to me.
