Do black boxes cause conflicts with engine management systems?

A young workmate is considering buying insurance with a black box, with an impressive discount, but is worried by stories she has heard of them causing conflicts with engine management systems. Do you know if these tales have any substance, or are they just apocryphal?

They definitely will not cause issues with the engine management systems based on the knowledge I have of them.
