  • 'luxury' supermini ? 22 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Good quality ICE (or easily upgradable) 6. Bright 'luxurious' interior (cream or light grey leather ideal) 7. Reasonable running costs. 8. Max £10k - if used, max 3 years old. I can't think of anything that comes close. My Yaris scores well on 1, 2, 4, 7, and 8, but poorly on the others. Most cars that score well on 3, 5 and 6 are too big.
  • New motoring offences 1 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Just caught a short piece on the news that there is going to be a series of new motoring offences which include (IIRC) "causing death by careless driving" (max. sentence 5 years) and "causing death whilst driving without an MOT, insurance etc." (max. sentence 2 years). Whilst I'm sure many people feel there have been serious gaps/weaknesses in the law which have often leading to apparently grossly inappropriate sentences, are these new laws going to make any real differences or are they just an example of an unpopular government kite-flying?

  • Tiny turbo pops! 8 Sep 2022 (Forum)
We’ve heard loads of cases of Fords now infamous Ecoboost 1.0 motors going pop early doors and many a tale of woe regarding Renault/Nissan’s 1.2 TCe engines failing catastrophically. I’ve just had a friends 2015 Vauxhall Corsa 1.0 Turbo with 35,000 miles up suffer engine failure.

  • see if I care..... 15 Mar 2004 (Forum)
C-4 or C-6? Not sure. It\'s built for trucks anyway. You can wind her up and drop her in D1 at the lights any time you like and she\'ll handle it. I can\'t get here the original Ford ATF made by Pennzoil and sold in every Walgreens (that\'s your Boots) in the US, but what\'s in there seems clean enough and she shifts fine.
  • Is the Mercedes A250e a good plug-in hybrid? 14 Jun 2021 (Ask HJ)
I'm thinking of buying a Mercedes-Benz A250e. Is there something you would recommend which is better? The 44 electric miles is the attraction.

  • Buying a second hand automatic 20 Jan 2020 (Forum)
My wife has recently found a new job where she's doing a lot more mileage than previously, and she's always wanted an automatic (where she comes from they're the norm although she passed in UK on a manual). We currently have a paid off Ford Fiesta 2013, and we're planning on trading that in for an automatic. Including the trade in, our budget will be around £8k max. I've been mostly looking at Japanese petrol automatics, and I've read a CVT is generally a pretty safe bet.
  • Mazda 3 auto - Which smaller car for my pensioner parents? 5 Aug 2014 (Forum)
So, they're currently weighing up the Kia Venga, Nissan Note and VW Polo, as well as the Mazda 3 and (my suggestion) the Ford C-Max. Any robust opinions out there?
  • Returning to UK with new baby. What car for £6K? 26 Mar 2010 (Forum)
Isn't too big (we'll be sharing the car and my wife likes small cars!). On the bigger side of things, I've looked at Ford C-Max/Focus estate. On the smaller side of things, the Honda Jazz or Nissan Note. If anyone had any suggestions, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks for reading!
  • Which car? 19 Oct 2004 (Forum)
car and need the following requirements: Diesel (I drive a fair distance to work) Cheap to run Cheap/easy to maintain Easy availability of spares Lots of space for moving junk etc Lots of space for kids Low mileage 5 doors.. It doesn't need to be particularly fast or trendy. My budget is max £5k ish. I don't really want to but a Ford/Vauxhall type thing due to bad experiences.. Previously I have owned Peugeot/Citroen type things, get on well with them and am familiar with how to fix the 'oily bits' In addition we have both a Eurocarparts and GSF shops within a few miles so getting spares are a breeze.
  • Peugeot 307 SW - Buying 2nd Hand Diesel - Appreciate mileage advice 1 Mar 2013 (Forum)

  • Volkswagen Golf IV TDI - Golf TDI shopping Dilemas 1 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Is buying a mint S Reg 180K IV with proper service history, and recent cambelt for £1500 too risky on other big stuff going wrong? test drove it yesterday, and it sounded and felt very smooth. Somthing newer and less miles a better bet?
  • Advice on replacement family car 16 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Whilst I don't mind it and it fits the space requirements, I'm not convinced that we need a 4x4. Am thinking something like a 2.2 diesel S-Max. Better value second hand, huge inside (although granted don't need 7 seats, but useful on occassion). Any views? This car will be a keeper for some time so depreciation not that high on the agenda.
  • Mondeo unless you know better. 18 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Hi everyone, Would appreciate advice here! Looking to buy and run a car for the next 3 years. £4,000 max budget, 20,000 miles a year, easy on motorways where it will spend 90% of its life is a priority as well as honest maintenance costs. It needs to be Mondeo or Vectra size and must have AC. Prefer petrol over diesel as at this price point there seems to be a premium for diesel and far less choice.
