  What we can now reveal, however, are some of the figures relating to the classic cars also involved in the scheme. No fewer than 45 examples of the Jaguar XJ-S, for example, were traded in and scrapped, as were 14 Porsche 944s, 18 BMW 6-Series, 88 Citroen 2CVs, 29 Peugeot 205 GTis and 22 Reliant Scimitars of various types. And if you’re wondering why there aren’t as many large saloons of the ’80s and ’90s on the roads as there used to be, it’s partly because the scrappage scheme saw the loss of 273 Saab 9000s, more than 700 Volvo 740s, 100-plus Ford Granadas and – amazingly – over a thousand Rover 600s.

  Thousands of petrolheads raise money for charity at CarFest 1 Sep 2015 (News)
  The brainchild of Radio 2 presenter and Top Gear host Chris Evans, CarFest has raised more than £3.5m for BBC Children In Need since it started in 2012. Donations are still being counted from the two 2015 events, but the total is expected to rise to nearly £5m. Evans presented all three days at the festival, which combines cars, music and food, is hugely popular with families. There was even a special edition of the BBC’s One Show broadcast live from the event on Friday evening.
