  We are to buy a new car for round about 10K to cover between 6,000 and 10,000 miles/year. First and foremost, we want reliability. I have looked at one or 2 Reliability Index studies but I have no idea how these are worked out, etc. I'm curious though as to how relevant they are. Are these various Reliability Index figures that one can find on the Net (especially the Warranty Direct one) that "reliable"?

  I was surprised to see Fiat in 3rd position in the reliability index (www.reliabilityindex.co.uk), one place above Honda. Does this put paid to all the flak thrown at Fiats recently in some of the posts?

  The car is then given a Reliability Index score and then the cars are ranked (top 10, top 100, worst 10 etc) Obviously this is good for manufacturers who apear at the top (free advertising) and bad for manufacturers that apear at the bottom (bad press) Now what if the reliability index was a load of cobblers and doesn't bear any resemblence to how reliable the car is?

  I've just been looking at reliability statistics published by Warranty Direct. Surprisingly the much-vaunted Golf has an index of 82, whereas the lowly Focus has an index of 29. (The lower the figure the better.) Who would have thought it?

  Reliability 199 (awful!)  Av cost repair £321.19 So is the reliability index reliable or are the figures skewed domehow? I also looked at the HJ MOT pass section and this gave different results again!

  I see the latest Warranty Direct reliability index has just been published. Some surprises there. But it is interesting to see how the cars are rated. The figure they come up with is a measure of number of breakdowns and the cost of them.

  vw golf has got a reliability index of 19 since 2000. thats good!(not the best).but tasty!! so come on slap umm?

  I have my doubts about taking the reliability ratings for the face value. The top rated car in Reliability Index is Kia Picanto and the "popular" reliable car VW golf is at 97. At first it looked like people's perception is not acually reality.

  Hi all, I am somewhat surprised that the CityRover has routinely appeared at the top of the reliability table in What Car? for superminis over the last few months (reliability judged according to claims with Warranty Direct). Though this may not be the best index for overall reliability, it seems a very good showing.

  I'm thinking of buying a used Audi TT. Trouble is, their online reliability index is dreadful. Obviously this is a bit worrying as I am thinking of buying one with about 50K on the clock. I'd be interested to hear any views on the reliability of the TT (good or bad) from any source, particularly current/past owners.

  We have come up with our shortlist of cars, one of them being Nissan Primera (1999 to 2003 model).   I have used the resources avilable (reliability index etc) to shortlist some reliable cars that I like the sound of (Toyota Avensis, Seat Toledo, Honda Accord, most of the Japs) now I need to know who's going to give me good honest customer service at a reasonable price.

  Just gave myself a nasty shock by looking up Puntos from 1999 on Reliability Index. Reliability is excellent at 28 but 66.67% of claims have arisen from "Axle & Suspension". If at the front, this could be expensive. Does anyone have any experience of this? Mine is the 1.2 ELX Speedgear CVT 5-door, first reg. 29-01-01, current mileage 36,400.

  Re: Faults Economies I agree that (IMHO) the WD Reliability Index doesn't take into account many factors, including the extent that each owner looks after the car (i.e. whether it's home maintained, at a rubbish backstreet indie or a decent one, similarly with the main dealers [whose quality can vary just as much]) and, just as importantly, drives it - someone who treats it with sympathy will get more life out of it without trouble than those who don't.

  I am searching for up to date honest opinions on the new Shogun - 2007 3.2 TD Automatic. Comments on the reliability index are not encouraging(!) If not the Shogun -an alternative please, must have 4WD diesel and auto, to tow max 2000kg. Thanks.

  Hence safety and motorway driving characterisitics may be inferior. 2) Nissan less reliable than Mazda, as per car reliability index stats. Mazda 3 Advantages:- 1) Larger car segment; Hence better safety and motorway driving charaterisitcs 2) Mazda more reliable than Nissan as per warrant direct stats.

  Based on the reliability index Honda ACCORD 2003 to 2008 model seems to be the most reliable car in this bracket. However, my budget could only buy those with high mileage from 80,000 upwards. Due to reliability, I think I prefer ex fleet to privately used from supermarket dealers.
