Petrol prices set to overtake diesel next week 4 Sep 2017 (News)
Early next week, petrol prices are expected to overtake diesel, as the shut-down of at least 11 large oil refineries in the Gulf Coast drives up US demand for petrol imports. Almost half of the country’s petroleum and natural gas refining capacity sits along the Gulf Coast while Houston, 30 miles inland, is home to the largest refining petrochemical production complex in the country. -

Competition-inspired Mercedes 300SLS heads to auction 24 May 2017 (News)

‘Time warp’ 1980 MG BGT to go under the hammer 17 Feb 2017 (News)
The sports car will be offered by Classic Car Auctions in its biggest-ever sale on 1-2 April at the NEC, Birmingham. Presented in original condition, the right-hand drive manual example was first registered on 17 September 1980 - the very last year of production. It carries an estimate of £12,000 to £15,000. The car has had just one registered owner and has clocked up just 1500 miles since leaving the British Leyland dealership in September 1980. -

Our tip for the next Ford to catch on as a classic is this – the original Mondeo. Despite being 23 years old, it still looks fresh and modern, and is still a decent car to drive, too, making it ideal as a usable family classic. It was also a brilliant car when new – a deserved European car of the Year winner, and a model that completely transformed public perceptions of Ford’s ability to engineer well-made and fine handling cars after the PR disaster that was the Mk 4 Escort. -
New fuel consumption test thrown into doubt by Brexit 7 Sep 2016 (News)

The news comes as HonestJohn.co.uk analysis shows that the gap between advertised and Real MPG economy is at its widest ever, with fewer than two out of every 10 cars achieving their advertised MPG. The current NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) test procedure was due to be scrapped in 2017 and replaced with the all-new WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light-duty Test Procedure). The WLTP test is said to be more realistic than the NEDC; however, with Brexit causing uncertainty across the board, the Government has now refused to say if it will implement the new test or not. -

Together with long-time friend, historic racing car preparation guru and racing driver Iain Rowley and his Nuffield-based company, Delta Motorsport, John embarked on a painstaking journey to return the car to exactly the same mechanical specification as it appeared at Kyalami, in order to fulfil the very stringent regulations of the Monaco GP organisers. Iain will be driving the car on the immortal 3.34km Monaco road circuit. A Grand Monday: Cherished 1998 Rover 800, £899 2 Feb 2016 (News)
So getting to Barrhill in Scotland isn’t too much of a hassle, then it definitely looks like it’s worth checking out. According to the advert, the car ‘drives superbly and smoothly, without clonks or rattles. Everything works correctly, although the windows could do with some lubrication as they open a bit slowly.’ It continues, ‘The interior is like new, and the ashtray and cigarette lighter have never been soiled.’ It even has the original owner’s wallet (complete with handbooks), the radio code, spare wheel, jack and tools. -
A Grand Monday: Low-mileage Montego estate, £899 25 Jan 2016 (News)
As you’d expect for such a cherished motor, it comes with plenty of history – old MoTs, handbooks, spare keys, dealer badges and even mats. According to the advert, it drives well and is comfortable at motorway speeds. It’s been garaged for the past year, but the current owner is losing his storage so needs to downsize his fleet. This Montego has just 22k on the clock. -
Ford Escort RS Turbo makes £60k at auction 21 Dec 2015 (News)
Other significant results at the sale included a UK auction record of £185,625 for a right-hand drive 1993 Ferrari 512 TR - £75,000 over its lower estimate. Another Ferrari, a last of the line 1999 Ferrari F355 F1 was hard fought over by bidders at the show, selling for £103,500. A 1991 Jaguar XJ220, formerly a part of the Brunei Royal family car collection, sold for a premium inclusive total of £315,000, while a beautiful 1956 Porsche 356A T1 Cabriolet was successfully sold for £196,875, more than £26,000 over its lower estimate. -
Volkswagen unveils all-new Tiguan 15 Sep 2015 (News)
The Tiguan will be available in four models, spanning from the sporty R-Line to off-road focused versions, with Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive. There’s also the possibility of a 218PS plug-in hybrid, with the Tiguan GTE Concept being unveiled at Frankfurt. The new Tiguan will be able to tow a caravan friendly 2500kg and feature a range of tech, with online notifications that will warn the driver about traffic delays, parking space availability and road works. -
Alfa Romeo Giulia launched 15 Sep 2015 (News)
The BMW 3 Series and Jaguar XE rival will reach the UK in 2016, with prices starting at around £22,000. The rear-wheel drive Giulia will effectively replace the discontinued 159 in the Alfa range and use an aluminium and carbon fibre construction to cut weight and improve economy. Details on engines and economy figures are sketchy, but expect the Giulia to be offered with a wide range of efficient diesels, along with a selection of high performance petrols. -
Anniversary of Blue Bird’s 150mph speed record celebrated 23 Jul 2015 (News)

Techno Classica 2015: Blue Train Bentley celebrates 85th birthday 20 Apr 2015 (News)
He arrived at the Conservative Club in St James, London for a celebratory drink having passed the clock at Victoria Railway Station at 15.30 the next day - four minutes before the train was due to arrive in Calais, having averaged 43.43mph driving on pre-motorway roads. He won the £100 wager, although the Automotive Club de France attempted to fine him £200 for an un-authorised race in France. The Speed Six evolved in 1929 as a racing version of the 6½ Litre, introduced in 1926. The first car raced as No 1 at Le Mans in 1929 where it won, and returned as ‘Old No 1’ to win again in 1930. -

Among the cars we like is this original 1954 Jaguar XK120 roadster in British Racing Green estimated at £61,000 - £68,000, but if you prefer your XK120s to be easier to drive, there’s also 1953 roadster brought up to date with a 5-speed synchromesh gearbox, estimated at £95,000 - £110,000. Historics is flagging the 1993 AC Cobra Mk IV in the main photo, built by Autokraft (which purchased the rights to the AC name) in its Brooklands factory. -
GM invests in distraction recognition technology 9 Sep 2014 (News)
And although safety is the primary purpose of the system, its remit can also be expanded to security; the system could potentially use facial recognition to determine if a thief is driving the car, for example, or use eye movement to operate a dashboard function. The Volkswagen Group already uses tiredness recognition technology in its cars, though its system monitors only steering movements, using an algorithm to establish behaviour conducive to tiredness and sounding a warning in response. -
'Steady' Barker's Lancia to star at the Autosport show 6 Jan 2014 (News)
The car will be unveiled at Autosport International and will be driven again by Steady Barker. He said: 'I test drove the driving chassis in November, and was happy with the way the car responded; I cannot wait to see it, completed in all but details, at Autosport International .' -
Brighton Speed Trials under threat from local authorities 24 Dec 2013 (News)
The Speed Trials has been running in Brighton since 1905 and is one of the UK's longest running car event - taking the form of a sprint for some of the UK’s best race cars and motorcycles along Madeira Drive. More than 200 vehicles line up to take a timed run including road cars, race cars and drag bikes who compete to win the fastest in their class. A top six run-off to find the fastest car and bike brings the day to a dramatic close.
