  • BMW 3 Series 318i SE Touring - Used car dealer refuses to fix fault on BMW 18 Mar 2010 (Forum)
(don't know how yet) Realistically i'll give them longer to try and fix it, but i'm worried that the warrany will run out and then they'll tell me to b***** off. I know a demister is not an important thing but this is the most expensive car I've bought and it's soooooooooooo lush, better than the last tin can i had. Any help would be so much appreciated as because I'm a girl I feel they giving me the brush off cos they think I is thick innit!!
  • SAAB - SAAB 93, good opportunity or bad idea? 4 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I am thinking of servicing / parts cost and availability as he would probably have the car for 4 years or so and this is the more important factor over residual value. We tend to drive the cars until they die (my MD has a 51 plate V70 which is still going strong at 180k miles or so), but running costs are a consideration (one of the reasons why I changed my Volvo to a BMW when the Volvo was getting tired)
  • Volvo S80 (1998 - 2006) - 04 2.4 a. Do I need oil? b. What kind? 18 May 2009 (Forum)
I don't understand my w's from my semi synthetics or my Castrol from my Sunflower but I do know that it's important. To that end, I checked the oil this morning as I do every 2-3 weeks and I have two questions...although I'm afraid both are as stupid as each other but I rather like this car so I don't want to do something silly like break it.
  • Mercedes Benz CLK W209 (2002 - ) - Found a lovely one.. but 11 May 2008 (Forum)
It has black leather, electric seats with memories that also memories powered steering wheel position, and mirrors - this is really important since Mrs G and I will be sharing it, and it has all the usual toys over and above that. It is in lovely nic, in fact the interior especially does not show it's age however.. 1. it has 93,000 miles on it, but seems to have a full service history, is the mileage anything to put me off (I would only do 9K miles a year).
  • Long term new car purchase Volume 2 14 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Valeting is indeed badly affected by the immigration issue however I have managed to tap into the upper middle class market who like their cars done at home and have an inclination towards a nice honest family chap who takes pride in his work and pays tax., thus they are willing to pay over the odds compared to the imported valeters. It takes time to build up a customer base long term but its starting to grow nicely and in the next couple of years it will expand nicely. No offense taken honestly, its good advice. I have sold my share in a property for £140k ( my nan has bought me out at a generous valuation by her choice ) and am looking at houses around the £120k mark, so my plan is essentially to stick £20k in the bank/premium bonds and spend £10k on the car.
  • Treating your car well - fueling 23 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I'm hoping all these things will help in the long run. But i can't help but revisit the fueling issue; surely its very important to feed your car decent fuel, i suppose its a bit like feeding yourself.
  • Mazda 6, what to watch out for? 13 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Plus from a variety of surveys Mazda usually seem to do well in terms of reliability, something which is particularly important to me. But, having read through the CBCB, the following gives me pause for thought: "Enough reports of premature clutch and clutch/flywheel failure to state that the model seems to suffer a much higher rate of this than would be normal.
  • Dartford Crossing 31 Oct 2004 (Forum)
The layout of the toll plaza is not designed for free flow conditions, and the toll plazas perform an important safety role in controlling the demand and speed of vehicles both through the tunnels and away from the bridge. For instance, southbound there are three closely spaced junctions, and much of the carriageway for through traffic is restricted to two lanes.
  • Oh so *that's* what the BMW badge means 15 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Just swapped a 1997 Jap import Honda Prelude Type-S for a 1996 BMW 528iSE and I have to say, I'm very impressed. (It was a free swap, no money changed hands.) Having never driven or even been in a decent, modern BMW before, I'd always wondered what the fuss was about, but now I've got one, it all makes sense.
  • Changing Times 8 Jan 2004 (Forum)
If anything, this is showing signs of increasing at an even faster rate in the future, and a straw poll of friends shows most motors to be imported second hand up to four years old from Germany. The roads are still usually empty, and the main ones are of good quality, though for how long now on either count? Connex run the local bus company though, and Tescos are springing up everywhere, so it is becoming more like home from home each time we go, even without congestion and worn out roads!
  • 2500 miles per month. £2500. Diesel? Petrol? LPG? 1 Jan 2017 (Forum)
However the SDI, does not have a Turbo or a DMF or a DPF. All the things that apparently I wish to avoid. Before opening the discussion is important to mention that I do most of the work on my own cars and after succesfully tackling the Head Gaskets on my 2003 outback, I am confident to do most jobs that wont require two people, a specialized place or specialized tools.
  • ABI category C and D writeoffs explained 20 Oct 2016 (Forum)
The independent inspection normally takes place at the vendors home or premises and  the all important chassis inspection is done on a pair of drive on ramps circa 1930s design.  Another cheap option is a four wheel alignment check, carried out at any good tyre centre.
  • Toyota Prius - Dealer Car Purchase Knowledge Is Power 25 Mar 2025 (Forum)
So after a lot of consideration and what seemed a lot of research/thought/discussion I went for a high mileage 2014 Toyota Prius UK model (£0 road tax along with cheaper insurance than an import). This was purchased from a dealer for an added "security" peace of mind via credit card (consumer rights protection?) and their 3 month warranty on engine/mechanical and 6 months on the battery. Came with a reconditioned battery the day before (invoice to prove it).
  • Honda CR-V - Suggested price for CR-V 2009 automatic 5 May 2024 (Forum)
The car including listed all above mainatance cost me around £6500 in total, and I did all work myself as mechanic, otherwise the labor cost would be extra money for garage costs. What price should I looking for ? Is the only year and millage important, I think the other car with the same year and millage could be in much worse condition and may need a maintenance work to get the tip top condition like mine. Best regards to everyone.

Found a few interesting things on sale but all things equal I’d love an 90’s hot hatch like a late 205 GTi 1.9, XR2i, Golf MK II GTi 8v, R19 16v or possibly a more mundane but rarer and often historically more important mainstream car that no one is preserving like a Rover R8 or a Ford Mondeo Mk I. Did see a few interesting things for sale if anyone cares to buy me one. • Find my daughter an automatic...? 7 Jul 2019 (Forum)
As you can see I'm trying to keep away from automated manuals / DCT and the Nissan notorious CVT but is that a good path to be following? Also as budget is £5K, age isn't as important as condition (although younger is normally nicer)   My research more and more makes me think I should do a website that allows folks to say they only want a T/C car or CVT car etc and be able to choose from a list of models.
  • Moscow motor show stars 29 Sep 2018 (Forum)
I can see elements of at least two Rolls royce models in there, along with a hint of Maybach (maybe a Rover 75 too?!). But as well as 'conventional' examples to tempt rich Russian's away from foreign imports, there will be armoured versions offering 'an uncompromising level of ballistic and explosive protection'. Engines available are a 590bhp 4.4 litre hybrid V8 co-developed by Porsche and a 6.6 litre V12 (no power figures mentioned, but probably 'sufficient'), https://cdn.motor1.com/images/mgl/wnk2Q/s1/2018-aurus-senat.jpg http://www.autodevot.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Aurus-Senat-rear.jpg
  • Nissan Qashqai? - Affordable new/used family car for long commute 3 Jan 2016 (Forum)
Its about a 150 mile round trip (much of it on the M25) and I'll have to go probably 3 days a week, so I need to buy another car that can do 25,000 miles a year. (My wife needs our exisiting family car - a 10 year old Prius). The most important criteria are: • A decent sized boot for my greyhound (when I'm not driving to work) • Really good fuel economy - I'm looking for at least 50mpg. • Total monthly running cost no higher than my rail season ticket of £400pm (I may get a small compensation allowance on top but probably no more than £100pm).
  • Mazda 3 / Skoda Octavia / new Suzuki Vitara - New car - hatchback/new family 28 Sep 2015 (Forum)
I've been looking at a number of cars, as one of the new criteria is that the car has to swallow baby seat, and both parts of the stroller in the trunk. Consumption does not get the final say, but important also. The last 3 still in the game are the following:   Mazda 3 sedan 2.0 petrol, 120HP: +: killer looks, japanese made (my old one has 205000 km without a fault), big boot -: not a lot of space on the back seat (wonder if I could fit a 0 group baby seat there, as it takes a lot of space), trunk opening as bad as on my current Mazda   Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDI, 105 HP: +: a lot of space on back seats, trunk opening can swallow an Airbus inside, excellent fuel consumption -: average/pensioner look, high price here in Croatia (22500€, whereas Mazda comes to 19500 in the similar spec level)   New Suzuki Vitara, 1.6 VVT petrol, 120 HP: +: cool crossover looks, nicely equipped for the price, gives same amount of space in back seats as Mazda, 375L trunk seems as it could just fit both stroller parts, has cam chain -: fit and finish (the door just doesn't want to clap when you gently try to close, completely unimpressed by that), price for diesel version goes sky high (21500€, unacceptable for a smaller car with this fit and finish), 1,6 petrol says 5,3L/100km (53 mpg), tests give 7,5L/100km (37 mpg)   Further to consumption, Mazda has 5,1L/100km (55 mpg) on highway test at 100km/h, and 7,0 (40) at 130 km/h, which is, for a 2.0 petrol, excellent.
