  • Tyre speed rating surprise 28 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Further imagine therefore my surpise that Pirelli P6000 tyres with a 186mph / Y rating are fitted as standard to my Volvo V70 2.4T. I was so surprised that I actually double checked the marking. As it happens, on my car the factory electronic speed limit (137mph) has been removed as a result of the BSR software that I installed, but unless I got lucky with the tyres (I doubt it) it makes me wonder why Volvo bothered with such an odd limit in the first place.
  • Which Automatic gearbox is the most reliable? 12 Aug 2021 (Forum)
Ford fiesta, Focus, C Max or B Max, Honda Jazz, Nissan Note, Mazda 3, VW Polo or Golf, Hyundai i30 or Volvo V40. Can anyone shed any light on which of these might have a reliable automatic gearbox. I will go for a car with full service history and has been well looked after. Or if you have any other vehicle suggestions then please let me know.

  • Used Full Hybrid family car advice 13 May 2021 (Forum)
Are there any other full hybrid family cars I could consider at a slightly higher price point? VW, BMW, Volvo? Seems like VW and BMW are either mild hybrids or PHEV now. Apologies in advance if I'm missing important information, this is all pretty new to me. Appreciate any guidance! thanks v m
  • Audi A4 Avant - £5k Petrol Estate 9 Feb 2021 (Forum)
For that kind of money my options seem to be cars from about 2005 to 2010 with about 80-125k miles, things like Audi A4, Volvo V50/70, VW Passat, Ford Mondeo, Subaru Legacy. Also maybe Lexus IS250 if I'm happy with saloon. I'm looking for some thoughts on the relative reliability of cars of that age/mileage and any ones to either short list or avoid.
  • Fords and Toyotas - which type of automatic? 20 Jul 2017 (Forum)
It might be helpful - thinking particularly of Sorceress who is looking for a small automatic - if we knew which cars have torque-converter autos or CVT (generally reliable) and which have semi-automatics (jerky, unreliable or both).  SLO will know this I'm sure, but all views welcome! From what I know, Volvos, BMWs, Mercedes, Mazdas, JLRs, Kias, Hyundais and most other big cars have TQ autos, and newer Hondas have CVT.  Only the biggest Audis have CVT, otherwise it's DSG throughout the VW Group. Fords and Toyotas seem to vary - so which have TQ autos and which have Powershift and MMI respectively?
  • Recommendations on Estate for £3000 . 28 Feb 2017 (Forum)
I do around 17k a year with a mix of motorway long runs  and town driving. I have been looking at Octavias - Honda Civics - Volvo V50 , Reliabilty and MPG are more important than gizmos or speeds but heard some horror stories with newer diesels . Current  car is a ford Fusion diesel that was bought at 85k and now just reached 150k but cost me a new clutch and Flyweek ( £700 )  - A couple of Leaking Injectors ( £300 )  - Shock Absorbers ( £150 )  in 3 years .
  • Hyundai ix20 or Toyota Jazz cvt - Choice of automatic 24 Apr 2015 (Forum)
I know choosing cars is a regular topic ( I've checked previous threads )  I'm hoping, within the next few months to get a newer car. Although I like Volvo I think an auto would lead to significantly high fuel bills so am ready to discount them as a choice. For my motoring a petrol is the better option. The Hyundai seems to be more traditional ( which appeals ) but Toyota cvt has good write ups.
  • Any - Technology leveraging increased insurance premiums 4 Feb 2013 (Forum)
All, I've read two seperate motoring journalist sources saying that, in the not too distant future, cars without 'city' emergency braking systems, such as those on the latest Volvos, Fords and optional on some Fiats, will suffer insurance premium penalties. How do we feel about insurance premiums calculated in part by the safety tech on your car?

  • Honda Accord - Million Mile Joe's Honda Accord 17 Jan 2012 (Forum)
He went for a very well specced 9-5 estate.   As far as I know the known record for any car is a Volvo 1800 coupe, with 3,000,000 miles.   I wouldn't want to do 1,000,000 in our Jazz, which has yet to do 10,000 miles. I'd be happy to have kept our A6 1.9 TDi Avant, which had done over 200,000 miles when we parted with it.

  • I've never bought an automatic... 19 Nov 2009 (Forum)
(For the record, I've seen an Astra 1.8 vvt auto and a C-Max 2.0 auto. Ok, as a curve ball, I've also seen a Volvo S60 manual 2.0 which I quite like for some reason too. Thoughts on any of these much appreciated!)
  • Can I get my deposit back 12 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Today, I paid a deposit of £500 for a Volvo XC90 T6. (Purchase price £11k) When I test drove the car, there was a strange noise when putting the car in reverse. The dealer said that he wiuld investigate and fix it. However, I have now looked on the internet and fond that the car is prone to gearbox failures which generally cost in the region of £5k to resolve.

  • Best older estate car-honest replies please! 7 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Basic requirement is for : -roomy load space in back when rear seats are folded down, -need to be able to carry a couple of large items(bumpers etc) -reasonably economical, prefer diesel -not too young-(pre 2000)so no catalytic converter test on MOT -reliable and well built, not requiring constant repair -I've got a motor trade background-so can do do my own work -considering Volvo 940/VW Passat/Ford Mondeo etc but am open to suggestions -not keen on french models. Thanks Bumperman
