1812 overdriveture 15 May 2009 (Forum)
Discussion on Radio 4 today about electric cars being a lot quieter than fossil fueled motors ... a petrol/diesel motor can be heard from 12ft away where'as an electric job can only be heard from 3 ft away (have I explained that properly!) They were saying electric cars may have to be made more noticible to peds and some suggestions were ~ Horses hooves ... but would sound like a stampede on the M25 etc., etc. -
M5 shut after LPG Land Rover fire 30 Dec 2008 (Forum)
The road was closed for an hour at junction 27, the Sampford Peverell turn-off, near Tiverton, after the incident at about 1130 GMT. 26 December 2008 Police said the motorway was closed for safety reasons because the vehicle was dual-fuelled, carrying petrol or diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fuel." I have not seen any other reports of other road closures for this reason. Will this lead to LPG conversions having warning stickers re LPG? -
France - 30 Years behind UK 21 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I remember filling up with petrol close to Dover in past times (maybe even 30 years ago) because the price in France was so ferocious. It's like old times - diesel fuel is more or less the same price now after the Pound has dropped against the Euro, but petrol is going to cost you around £1.20 a litre. I hear that some of the booze in the "cheap" shops at Calais is now more expensive than your local Sainsburys and the car parks are empty. -
Car renting advice 3 Nov 2008 (Forum)
In 4 days I'll drive about 700 miles or so. I'm thinking of getting either a VW Passat or Focus, would like it to be diesel. While approaching one of the car rental companies, could I be specific about a model and fuel type? If so what would be the best possible car rental company in or around Slough? { typo in header corrected } -
Honda Accord UK (2003 - 2008) - 55 plate CDTI - glowplug light on 31 Jan 2008 (Forum)

Citroen AX Radio 27 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Hi All We have just bought a Citroen AX diesel as a runabout and so far its been brilliant. I've only filled it up once, done 200 miles so far and the fuel gauge is still on 3 quarters. The car had no radio and I've bought a Citroen one for it. -

can vauxhall be trusted? 17 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Having experienced GM's unacceptable 1.6 petrol engine as at 1996 but having had no trouble with their current (if hardly leading edge) 2.0 DTi unit I am wondering if Vauxhall's current engines (petrol and diesel) and their engine management systems can now be relied upon to stay the course and keep out of the shop, and if the petrol engines, like those of other makes, can run satisfactorily on any BS standard fuel. -
Xsara headlamps 13 May 2002 (Forum)
(The handbook shows which lamp is which, but not how to get to them). There appears to be little space to get to the back of the lamp unit especially on the diesel where part of the fuel gear is close to the back of the lamp. Has anyone experience of changing the lamps? Can the whole unit be released just by undoing the torx screw behind the top of the unit? -
Transit van economy 15 Dec 2001 (Forum)
I can avoid the bridge by going across country - takes longer than going down the M4, not much more miles though (app: 100 v 90). Is the Transit likely to drink £8:70 worth of extra fuel due to the none motorway type road? - it will be unladden on the way. Having not used a big van or diesel much I'm not too sure of the effect on mpg of winding roads and dealing with traffic. Anyone who uses a Transit regularly on Mway and winding country roads have any suggestions? -
which drivers' car for commute? 25 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I've shortlisted the following: Focus / Mazda 3 1.6 diesel - have driven and liked both but my budget would involve highish mileages and concerns about diesel reliability As above but 2.0 petrol - not sure if I'd get near 40mpg on my town & country commute Previous gen Civic 2.0 Type S - fuel economy again? -

Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - Common rail crap or what. Views please! 6 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Had a ferry booked from Scotland that evening when it all went horibly wrong putting the car through its paces Glow light / engine management system was on - lost power - limp home mode - disgusted - ford garage - computer fault read out - looked like whole fuel system needed replacing - metal bits in fuel system - circa £1500 In fairness the guy selling felt a completely awful. He gave me my depoisit back (£100 paid through ebay) and paid for a flight home. -
Larger Estate - Another Petrol v Diesel question! - with specifics 9 Feb 2015 (Forum)
I drive at 70-80 on the motorway. - I reckon I cover no more than 6000k miles a year. I'm not sure which fuel the distances I cover are best suited to. I have heard some Petrol, as they are relatively short distances, although I heave heard others say that the diesel engine will run better from cold. I also would like power available to me, without having to worry that it's going to cost me a fiver everytime I overtake somebody. -
Dacia Duster 1.5 diesel 4x4 - New Dacia Duster 1.5 diesel 4x4 -first impressions 1 Mar 2022 (Forum)
Then reset the TPMS on the dashboard- dead easy as it's the non-sender type, another bonus. The rest of it. Sweet little 8 valve Renault 1.5 diesel starts instantly, very quiet and pulls well. Gears a bit notchy in fifth and sixth but will loosen up I guess. Good feel from the clutch. Brakes with a reassuring bite. -
Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - Diesel versus Mazda 6 Petrol 13 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I've had my Mazda 6 a year now, and it is a very nice car. However, it drinks like a fish and I'm a bit bored of sticking well over a hundred quid of fuel in it every month just to toodle around town delivering children and getting to work and back. I never get more than 275 miles out of a 65 pound fill, which is a bit galling after getting the best part of 450 miles out of a tank of diesel (around town too) when I had my FIAT Stilo Multiwagon. -
GDI Engines - Ford 15 Dec 2020 (Forum)
The other main concern (this must also apply to other GDI engines) is carbon build up on the inlet valves. As opposed to more traditional engines, fuel is injected directly into the cylinder, hence the valves aren't cleaned by the fuel. This leads to the seal of the valve being compromised, then lack of performance, rough idling, etc. Two questions of forum members: 1.
