  Been pondering fitting a ten panel solar array plus battery system at the old ponderosa. Lowest price I’ve got to date with a 5kwh battery is £10,995, or £12,500 with 10kwh battery. The estimate savings are around £900 a year which means the system will take over 14yrs to pay for itself on the assumption that I use the subsidised 0% mortgage for renewables/insulation offered by my building society which gives you 5yrs interest free, then switches to the svr.

  It will be tempting when you go shopping or park somewhere even at home to 'top up' your batteries, but will doing so shorten the lifespan...ie do batteries have a finite number of recharges or time or use or what exactly governs the expected life? Will they require running almost flat every so many charges and then a long trickle charge or could you rapid charge them from only half charged permanently to no detriment.

  Had a bit of a nightmare over last couple of months with this car so much i just want to get rid of it!! Our new problem is battery light coming on about 30 seconds after start up, no problems starting or signs of low battery etc but just recently we also now have slight smoke coming up from under the bonnet. We do have squeaking noise that has been gradually getting worse and ive been told this is the tensioner?

  A few weeks later I tried to start the car to go home after work and was met with the immobiliser light flashing a sequence, a lot of relay chatter from passenger fuse box and a ticking/whirring from under bonnet - after a few attempts it died completely as if the battery was flat. I jumped the car the next day and had the battery / alternater checked and all looked good (alternater is 18 months old, battery around 4 years) All has been fine until today, tried to start the car again, same problem, flat battery.

  I use a 3 stage charger (in the Summer the battery is off the car as I have an older one that is OK for Summer). It boost charges at about 14.10v and when fully charged, backs off  to about 13.87 for a maintenance charge. Now, the strange thing is, when off charge and disconnected (floating), the voltage (fully charged on a newish battery) should be about 12.80v.

I bought a new battery the other day thinking that my previous one was getting abit old now, so that may be a weak point. For the first day or so of having the new battery, whilst driving, the voltage showed 13-13.5 volts.

  When I took it back to the Dearler last Saturday they had it for over 7 hours and then decided to try new battery on the car as they felt that under load the battery was losing power. Has anybody heard of this sort of problem? I did say that if battery not holding charge would that not be the alternator? VW said no.

  This morning the car was fine on the 25 mile trip to work and I parked up at 9am, then at midday flat as a pancake. Jump starting and all is well. The battery is new and when the problem occurs by the time the car is jump started the problem has gone such that an ammeter in series with the battery when switched off reveals no significant current drain.
