France - Whats the "T" stand for on road 18 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Touring last year on the D420 in France we followed the signs & suddenly found ourselves on a very narrow road ( in fact so narrow had to turn caravan towing mirrors in & inch our way over a bridge) we then noticed on the next sign post that it was the D420t & the T was very small! I assume it means something on the lines of rural route but perhaps someone can enlighten me please, not much fun when the outfits almost 45' long & the buildings overhanging the road meant removing the arial of the van to clear with much amusement to the locals who spoke no English Regards France given a capital and its not Paris ! -
Terrano:Broken clutch after engaging 4WD 8 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Recently put my Terrano car in for service and on the test drive whilst driving the car after the service, the mechanic engaged the 4WD whilst the car was moving. The car then lost drive and they had to tow it back to the garage. On inspection the clutch had broken with the inner part having sheared off from the outer part. There was no sign of clutch wear and tear. Question is : do you have to engage the 4WD whilst the car is stationary or can you do it whilst moving. -

1997-2000 Shogun or Colorado? 8 Jan 2007 (Forum)
I'm looking to buy a 1997-2000 Shogun or Landcruiser Colorado to tow our caravan. There still seem to be some nice examples of each out there, especially as I'm happy to buy a petrol one (Shogun 3.5 or Colorado 3.4). I'd appreciate any feedback from anyone who's owned or traded either (or both). -
Flooding a diesel (Ford Galaxy) 20 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Hi, My Galaxy diesel took six attempts to start this morning - at only 6 degrees C. Initially I thought it was a tow to the garage job, but I kept on trying and it did start eventually. Can diesels (Ford 2.0 TDCi in my case) get flooded by themselves? I know about not starting modern petrols for a very short time as that can cause them to flood, making later attempts to start them a problem. -
fiat punto 52 plate 1.2 dynamic 14 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Travelling on M1, aprx 70 mph - the engine coughed and sputtered twice, engine mngment light came on/fuel pump on dash (yellow) then foot down could only go 40/50 mph, any type of gradient only reaching max 30mph. I managed to get to my destination eventually. Had it towed to Fiat dealers tonight - anyone any ideas of what it could be, cost and why? Just so I don't go into the dealers looking like pound signs. Mileage 39000k fully serviced etc Thanks muchly!! Look forward to hearing from you -
Abandoned vehicles (again) 20 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Now I have used these vehicles in Africa and had the use of one on the Hesketh estate many moons ago and they are tough and good tow vehicles. OK so something major engine wise may have gone wrong but it had to be driven to where it was abandoned at least. Is such a car really worth so little as to be abandoned under current market conditions? -
renew my car later in the year 22 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I know most will say we shall never have to drive like that. Which is true. But it worries me where I shall also tow a caravan and I don't want to worry about ploughing straight on with or without the van in bends or corners. If you drive in wet/damp conditions or even on a frosty surface, you could in effect have the same cronic Understeer at low speeds. -
VW steering fault 2 Jul 2006 (Forum)
The second time the light came on, it was the usual 'computer says no', i.e. no reported fault so no action taken (except to extinguish the light). Third time round the steering packed up altogether. Vehicle was towed away. When the dealer had had a chance to examine the vehicle I was told that a new rack would be fitted. They placed one on order, but did mention that they had quite a few on back order which indicates to me that this is not an uncommon occurence. -
Primera distributor problem 1.6 P11 1999 29 May 2006 (Forum)
Got the AA man out (very good bloke BTW), and he diagnosed "ignition live to distributor OK but no HT output", and mentioned it will need either the distributor fixed or fitting a reconditioned unit. Got a tow to a garage where I will call round in the morning... Any thoughts as to the likely outcome; cost wise, best source for parts, etc? Many thanks. -
white smoking diesel - Ford Maverick 2 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Ive had a 2.7td mark1 95/96 from new.its done 56k and only towed a small caravan recently. The past few weeks it has been running rough when first started with white smoke and misfire type feeling. yesterday when on motorway it started smokin white smoke at 2500 to 3000 revs periodically and felt as if misfiring and underpowered. -
What 4x4 for £7k? 30 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Hello. I'm in the market for a 4x4 and have around £7k to spend. It needs to be able to tow my 1500kg boat trailer, and a set of low ratio gears would be handy for pulling the trailer up slipways, across beaches etc. I also need plenty of space in the boot for my sailing gear, so the 4x4's I've thought of are Discovery, LWB Terrano, or the LWB Trooper. -
Audi A4 TDi 90 - Yet Another New Gearbox 20 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Can anyone tell me the warranty period on a new gearbox and if it is still in warranty he will have any issues by virtue of the fact that the work was done at an Audi dealer in France? He does tow a caravan but this does seem unbelievably bad luck. He is going to buy Japanese next time. -
1.0 R Reg Corsa cutting out 4 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Hi all Just been driving down the M57 and my Corsa suddenly cut out. I managed to get it off the motorway and towed home. I can start it and it will run for about 5-10 seconds and then I hear a click from behind the passenger side dash and immediately the engine management light will come on and it will cut out again. -
VW Bora - emissions warning light 24 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Exhaust emissions warning light came on a few months back, battery cut out, car wouldn't start, and after being towed to a local garage, spent 4 weeks there before they told me that it was all down to a corroded wire. Same light came on a couple of days ago after I went over a particularly vicious speed bump. -Should I assume it's the same problem or something more serious?? -
vectra di power loss 9 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I have a 1997 Vectra 2l di 130k, the problem is that lately the brakes have gone spongey at the pedal, feeling very vague, and after a few seconds slowly head for the floor,as if i am loosing fluid or have a knackered servo, but have no fluid loss,at the same time the engine is as dead as a door nail, nearly 50% down on power, this problem would come and go, but now it is aways there, and feels like i am towing a bus everywhere,,,,can anyone help, before all my hair is pulled out.. {No need to SHOUT!! Which by typing soley in upper case is effectively what you were doing. Duly edited. DD} ;o) -
Ford Courier 1.8D dead as a doornail 14 Jan 2004 (Forum)
This van has basically given up on me - over the last couple of days it would sometimes not turn over when the key was turned. Eventually it refused to turn over at all. Attempts at jump starting failed completely, only a tow start got it going again. First thought was a dead battery, as the battery light would display curious behaviour - it came on with the ignition turned on, but would then immediately go out until the glow-plug circuit had switched off, and then it would come on again (very faintly until I recharged it). -
Omega - good bet ? and which one ? 23 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Two questions for you in the know : (a) IF I go for one, which engine represents best value and (b) will it give me relatively trouble-free cheap motoring a la Carina ? My requirements are plenty of room (family of five), ability to tow trailers all over Europe, good Motorway runner and I like lots of bells & whistles on. Any advice appreciated Cheers -
Burnt out loom? 15 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I have a thread going on this and the problems i have had with my current dealings with alfa. The RAC engineer when he towed the car away said if its a burnt out loom that alfa may write the car off! Its only done 3,000 miles,so is he winding me up,or is what he says a possibility? I have no idea re electrics, engines etc, i just drive cars and need to daily, which ironically is one of the reasons i bought a new one!
